Would like to buy a plow for my 1960 John Deere 630. I will be using it to plow in some heavy clay as well as loams. Should I look for a set of 3 bottom 14" or can it handle a set of 3 bottom 16" ?
Thanks,
Tom

I reality,I dont think you will 'feel' much difference in 'how hard' they pull. However, for your needs I would suggest/reccomend either a 2x16 0r 3x14.Tis better to have more tractor than plow, than too much plow for your tractor.

14,s at maybe 4th gear most of the time, 16s 3rd gear nice easy soil and or FLAT decent moisture soil. Depends on tractors cond also and with or without fluid filled 13.6 or 14.9s?

I have my fathers JD620 and I did a lot of plowing as a kid. We had MF3-14's behind it for a lot of years. When it was replaced we went with an OL3-16's. The Oliver was heavier and we had to plow with the loader on, but it would pull it. Down in second a lot but it pulled it. I recommend the 3-14's.

Went up to JD720 and added a fourth bottom to the Oliver plow eventually. Still have the plow but don't use it much any more. I miss the 720 greatly. It was replaced with a JD 4320.

In heavy soil, 3X14's if you want to plow in 2nd or 3rd gear, 4X14's if you like first or second gear. We pulled a 4X14's Deere fully mounted with our 630 all through the 60's and it generally was too much plow in our black Northwest Iowa soil. Sometimes we could pull it in 3rd gear in the spring in lighter soils plowing corn stalks. Fall plowing was a different story. Do you know how long it takes to make a round in 1/2 mile rows in 1st gear? How do you spell the word boring? Jim
