So I get a call from a guy who says his Jeep Cherokee lost 4 wheel drive. Said he had it in low lock and it was making an odd noise. This is one of those all tracks by the way. With out seeing it I am figuring that a CV joint has gone out. So what do you guy think is likely..
Thanks. V-8 with automatic by the way

Chain broke in T case or engagement not working properly. Don't know much about them and how they engage, my old wagoner is vacuum operated, but I'm sure it's some electric gizmo on that model.

My nephew had a 2000 dakota all wheel drive. I would think that's the same system. He had problems with the linkages. The little plastic bushings fell apart and the one end of the linkage fell off. I'm not sure if he last all wheel drive but I know he couldn't lock it in anymore.

Could have one of their units that the transfer case has couplings (forget the exact term) inside of it that fail on a regular basis. Best thing we ever did was to get rid of those Cherokees from our home fleet.

sorry can't be much help in that area but we run the jeep wrangler units in 200,000 mile range all time (RHD units )and have very little issue really. Never had what you asking come up,will let you know if do. most issue is with the emission canister filling full dirt and that restricts trying to fill the gas tank, that been the only main issue we have had. ordered another new RHD unit yesterday. Any sub carriers out there be interested in good used unit for that. also have chevy blazer dual steer unit if anybody needs. sorry old maybe can be more help next time. he says lost 4 wheel drive but yet makes noise? don't sound me like he lost it he has bearing or like you said joint issues

Got it out of the ditch he put it in this morning. The CV Joints appear good as in the boot all and whole so pretty much can not be the problem since it one was bad the boot would be in pieces. He tried it in both low lock and normal but the front axle just does not have any power going to it. So it is sitting in his drive way part of the way to his house in the snow. Suppose to be in the 50s Sunday so he should be able to get it ti his house by then

Time for a transfer case. My wife is on her 3rd 99-04 era jeep. All of them have been v-8's and full time 4wd. All 3 of them needed a transfer case before 150,xxx.

Old ask him if it has been acting up at full turn, kinda walks around the turn not smooth at all. If so, it has an internal CV that goes bad about 85,000 miles, if it broke you will need a new transfer case. The last one I bought was 800.00 for parts Jeep charged me 100.00 labor to fix it.(I cant pull a tranny and case for 100.00)

Guess my ball park figure was off by around $300 I told him around $500 for a transfer case but then had to go with what others had said which has not been much. Thanks
