I have heard of them, but I really do not understand what is meant! Could someone make me alot smarter? Please! Thanks

Whenever we saw sun dawgs as a kid, we knew tomorrow was going to be COLD! The way I heard it described-the moisture in the atmosphere is cold enough to freeze, when the sun shines thru it is creates an incredible sight!

I always thought it was a rainbow in the winter. Just as light passes thru rain & makes a rainbow it is light passing thru snow or frozen moisture making a rainbow.

A sun dog is a result of sunlight being refracted, usually by ice crystals in the high atmosphere. Although it is similar to a rainbow, sun dogs are visible when facing the sun while rainbows are seen only when the sun is at your back. A rainbow is refraction by moisture in the air as well.

Sun Dogs come in different forms. Most are a small section of a rainbow on either side or both sides of the sun.

Some Sun Dogs come in the form as a very bright spot in a cloud on one side or both of the sun that looks as bright as the sun itself. The sundog is always smaller than the sun though but can be very bright.

Bad weather can follow a sundog as early as 6 hrs or as late as 3 days.

Now if you want reallly rare is a MOON dog. I have seen maybe three that I can remember. Almost always full moon or a day or two eather side of it. Sun dogs are neat looking and many times you will first catch it out of the corner of your eye. They photograph pretty fair with a polarizer filter. jeffcat
