Someone with bigger problems than you

I did not know about the Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda. It happened in early Nov. 2013.

I have fond memories of the Philippines. They are a great people. I really enjoyed getting to know some families over there.

I will have to contact them to see if any of them where involved in the bad damage.

They live north of Manila away from the coast so hopefully they have not taken too much damage.

I'm kind of a news junkie (mostly Fox), and I remember a lot of coverage at the time, but it came and went fairly quickly. The Katrina story had much longer "legs" because there was lots of finger pointing afterwards about the folly of living in a city below sea level, no realistic evacuation effort, slow response by rescuers, the fiasco at the Superdome, etc. This was just a pure natural disaster- nobody's fault, really nothing could have been done differently, and many countries sent aid and help immediately afterward.

The sad part of that Mike is they wanted to blame everyone but themselves.

1. The federal government cannot step in and force an evacuation or attempt a rescue unless the president declares marshal law or the governor of the state request help from the federal government. The only officials who can respond prior to a call for help are people within the state to include the National Guard.

2. Once the state failed to evac the city and Katrina was htting at full force it's almost impossible to do anything. First order of business for setting up a rescue operation is housing, feeding and caring for the rescuers. Kinda hard to pitch a tent city in a hurricane.

So the governor of LA failed to ask for help before it became a major problem. When they did call for help about all the federal government could do was move stuff a close as possible so they could set up to go in when the storm broke. Most of the errors there were at the city and state level.

Yea the storm in the Philippians was bad. And you get into a lot of 3rd world countries the infrastructure isn't great. That really complicates rescue and recovery.
