Farmall M Belly pump

I have a Farmall M with the Belly pump hydraulics system. I purchased a hyd pump that bolts in front of the distributor. I want live hydraulics but dont know how to connect the existing reservoir to the system. I have a 2 spool selector valve and all the hoses/connectors. I just dont know how to hook the belly reservoir. Thanks alot....

You may want to buy a reservoir and bolt it to the side rail of the tractor. One bad thing about belly pumps they don't hold much oil. They were mainly for one-way cylinders and if you're going to use the tractor with a two way cylinder the belly reservoir may not hold enough oil or it may overflow. Just speaking from experience. A separate reservoir is money well spent.

Pipe the return to the bottom of the res. We had two Ms set up that way with loader ect and they worked just fine

I drilled ad tapped a hole in the front bottom of the belly reservoir for a 3/4" pipe used it for my pump inlet and used the drain hole for the return. Ran it all last year with no problems.

It has a M&W pump and I added the valve for two outlets. I wasn't using the pulley anyway. Look under the belly and you can just see the hose going into the belly pump res.

PS
The dates on the pics are wrong, they were taken last summer.

One way is to drill and tap a hole in the belly pump for the suction. Done some modifying on the one pictured. Just have a cover plate with the guts removed in the belly reservoir, added another reservoir under the tank that flows into the top of the belly reservoir. Return oil from the control valves goes in below the fluid level on the top tank. Top tank is vented, bottom one is sealed except for the suction lines. Holds around 5 gallons of oil.

Ok, here goes.

The live pump on mine pulls from a fitting drilled into the bottom of the belly pump. It then runs from the pump to the valves and then dumps back in the fill point of the belly pump. I have a loader and two remotes on mine, so I need more juice. Mine has an additional hose that comes out of one of the right side port holes on the belly pump and runs to a tank mounted on the left frame rail. It pulls fluid from that tank as needed. I have more than enough capacity for the things I do with that tractor.

However, if I had it to do all over again I would abandon the belly pump completely. It only holds a gallon and a half. I would mount one of those rectangular steel tanks on the right rail by the pump, run a line to the pump, from the pump to the valves and from the valves back to the tank.

Remember you need a full loop as your valves will be two way and your belly pump isn't (set up stock).

We brought a M that had live hyd. using the belly pump as a reservoir. Had to remove the belly pump to repair transmission so made a 5+ gallon tank that fits in space that the belly pump occupied. Works good and has 6 valves to supply 3-pt.hitch with forklift and all hydraulic loader with hydraulic grapple. More than enough oil to raise a 14' IH barge wagon when the fork lift is not on the 3-pt. Armand

One item not mentioned is a concern if your M is older than mid 1950 production date. The Timing Gear on the cam shaft drives the new Hydro pump/and distributor. The early gear was not designed for the load applied by the Pump. they do fail and they stop the engine cold. No limping home. All replacement gears are the heavy design. It does mean removing the timing cover. If yours is newer or an SM, all is well. Jim

Notjustfair, you can use your belly pump in conjuction with a two way valve. Just pull the lever on your belly pump so it's always pumping oil thru the lines thus going thru your two way valve and you can direct it from there where you want it to go. Works great. An open center two way valve will let the oil flow right back to the tank when you're not using the valve.
