I am a STO (small time operator), This summer I had 25 acres
of hay on three off site farms. This has to be hauled home for
use or sale.

My Mother is in her mid 70's and in great health. She lives on
the home farm across the field from my home. My Father in
Law is in his late 60's and in good health. He lives about 10
miles away.

I have to laugh with my wife when it is time for me to move this
hay. If either my Mother or Father in Law find out I am moving hay they race to be
the first one to "help" me move this hay by driving a truck
pulling trailers. Often times whomever I do not get to help will
pout for a couple of days.

I am very thankful for both of them. I try to divided the help up
because it helps both of them feel needed, and keeps them
busy.

I am wondering if others have the same " delima" ?

Sincerely want to thank you for sharing this heartwarming problem you have. I had similar problem many years ago with my Dad helping when I was doing landscape work. I miss him today!

Keep them "busy" ... they love you for it!

there is nothing like the feeling you can still pull your own weight. one old guy told me there is two kinds of tired the tired from not working and the tired from working.
i have known several older people who would love to physically work but were unable and i would tell them its not your hands i need its your mind and your knowledge this site is a great example of that. sometimes i would invent something it would always bring on a smile knowing they can still be usefull.

Put your FIL on a tractor and have him rake hay for you. There are those times when that hay is curing out exceptionally fast and one could bale right away. Put him to work he will love you for it. Some retired folks have run out of projects, need something to "work on". Put them to work. It may sometimes have been easier to DIY. But they are happy to be useful.

I remember when my Dad was about 85, he told me he worked just as hard as ever, just didn't get as much done. I think that's true of a lot of us.

Thanks for a good story! That's about like having too much money. Not that I know anything about that. . .

I"ve been sprucing up the house in Dallas. My 70 yr old sister, her husband and my 93 yr old mother have been helping a lot over the last two weeks.

Mom frequently complained when I didn"t have anything for her to do. She still handles a paint brush as well ans anyone!
