Old Man Winter is hanging on with a vengence.

Well today is the last of 2013, but The winter season has already been a long one here in central NY. No huge 24hr snowfalls here locally, but presistant clippers/squalles several days each week. This afternoon a "clipper blew through leaving a 2" snow fall in about 45 mins. Pics taken from woodshed and back door of my house. Temp has been 12-16F all day, with light to moderate winds. I guess this was OMW's last hurraw for 2013, but we are suposed to get heavy snow Thursday-Friday, with lower temps.
There have been much heavier snowfalls an hours drive, to my north, this year in the Tug Hill area, East slopes, of the Great Lakes. 4 ft, and more in some locations, plus the Ice storm farther north.
I sure am glad that all my firewood is undercover and within mere feet of my wood boiler and fireplace. No trecking out across the yard to stoke an OSWB. It's a comfey 75F here in the house as I post. Wind has picked up again, 20-26mph as I am posting and it's snowing again.I guess old mister winter still isn't done for the year. LOL.

Yes, well it's only just begun, and I'm sick of it already. Went around some fields yesterday with the TLB pushing back some brush, touching up some ditches, etc. It was quite soft. So, I thought maybe today I could plow. Nothing doing- froze too hard overnight.
No projects in the shop. I've already gone over the lawn mower. That's on the bottom of my list, so it usually gets put off!

Yes we're in for some ride! Weather guessers say up to 14" of snow for our area. Going to the barn at 4:30pm today was like driving in a white out, but blew threw withen a few minutes. We got home at 5:30, and 10 minutes later the wind was howling! Happy New Year Loren.

Yeah aren't we lucky I don't know why it is but it happens every year. We just started framing a 3700 square foot house. Frame in winter rock and trim in summer. Last winter it was an 8400 square foot commercial building. We were working in that squall this afternoon. NY Catskill Mts

Hey Bob- you can come over here to Wisconsin and I could pile on a few projects for you....

Tomorrow I'm doing a brake job on Dad's Tacoma. Ordered new rotors and pads as he said it made a grinding sound, which leads me to believe that the pads are down to metal.

I've got about $75 invested in it, and I'm doing it as a Christmas gift. I still have to tear apart the beater gear box on our Gehl 920 chopper box so I can fix it, and a few other projects. If we're lucky enough to get a thaw before spring, I've still got about 30 acres to plow under.

Plus, we need to find a new beater for our H&S 220 manure spreader. Just put a new apron in it last year, and I replaced the hitch frame a year or 2 earlier so definately worth fixing vs. replacing. The baler needs work, our NI 290 haybine should get rebuilt, the hayrake needs a little work, my wife wants to paint some rooms in the house, and I've gotta prune the orchard (5 apple trees and 4 pears) before spring. Too darn cold to want to venture out there right now, but it's gotta warm up sooner or later.

Loren, may I ask where you are located?
I presumed your in the Adirondacks from your handle.
In my area they are calling for 6-12" and 20 mins north it's 2-4' by Wednesday afternoon.
I'm located 7 miles west of Central Sqaure.

Winter can't be too bad there as I can see 90% of the post on your street sign, and the snow isn't up to your window sills yet. haha

I'm afraid we are in for a long winter UP here as we've only had like 3 days above 20* F since the beginning of December with 4 feet of snow on the ground now and over 12 feet of snow for the season.

One year when I lived in Albany we got 175 inches, was about 1971, and I think it was a record for annual snowfall. In the late '60's living in Glens Falls we got 48 inches in 3 days, even those seasoned snow fighters had to dump snow in the Hudson to get rid of it.
Booneville was the worst, usually 200 inches a year...lake effect.

What have the snows been like the last 10 years?
Much less than 30 years ago?

about 4 years ago Windham NY got 7 feet of snow in about 3 days. I saw numerous buildings collapsed. Sister in laws fabric building went down and her sons mobile home collapsed on one end, luckily He and his wife fell asleep on the couch(tired from trying to shovel snow off other buildings) and the kids were at the other end of trailer.

Ed, I grew up 35 miles north of Glens Falls near Gore Mtn. Had 46 inches overnight in the early 80's! Weather patterns of the 40's-60's changed in the mid 70's. The lower Adk region got a lot less snow. We used to keep track of it and usually had 12-16 feet per winter. Not anymore!

I know where Windom is, just south of Prattsville. It always snows there, I think even in the summer. As I remember no one live there in the winter and just NYC tourist in the summer.
I seem to recall that the village was flooded a couple of years ago.
Just move .

We got an inch or so up here near Gouverneur NY yesterday. Bad part is there is a 1-2" crust out there now on top of 6-8" of sugar snow. Once you break through it's all over unless you have chains on. OTOH, my kids have been getting a lot of sledding in on the old Flexible Flyers that normally aren't worth beans for sliding in soft snow. They went ice skating yesterday too- on the fields! No need to find a pond at all.

But yeah, this is going to be a looooong winter.

Not a record breaking December for us, but it started early, stayed cold, and we had one of the top ten snowiest Decembers, (8th I think). Then there was the disastrous ice storm just before Christmas. That was a record. Temps in the single digits again today. I'm sure looking forward to doing the outdoor chores again today! Pass me the crowbar to chip the ice out of the watering troughs. Load up a bunch of buckets of hot water out of the bathtub!

Good Morning Loren

Seems like we've had a tough December here in NWIA but according to the records it's way down the line as far as being cold. The last two Decembers have spoiled up by being abnormally warm. The forecast for Monday is -7 for a high with a blustery wind. Not a good day for running Marilyn's sis to Omaha for a cancer checkup. Jim
