crop raising question..cultimulcher

I plant 75 acres of corn and 20 acres of hay yearly. My old noble mix n till works..but the rolling harrow is shot. New mounted harrow costs close to 5k..probably 5x what the machine is worth. So I was looking for a used harrow to mount..Cant find anything..and if I do..its 3k..so why buy used? Next thought is a cultimulcher. Pull the noble first..then the cultimulcher..Any pros/cons with this approach? An extra pass...but I have time..lol..
 
I've had a cultimulcher for 30 years, and use it to level fields out after disking or working it up, and to finish out a field when I plant hay. They are not a primary tillage machine, but act as one of the best bed makers and leveling machines around.
 
Have no idea what your noble is. Cultimulcher first got back in 69. Used every year. Especially after spring plowing. Before had it would tru to do same thing bu hooking a cultipacker to front of a spring tooth harrow and a second packer in the back.
 
We pull a cultimulcher in front if a john deere 8300 drill with a grass seeder on it for alfalfa planting hooked together. Works great. End up with a smooth field. It was broken this spring and I put in a little 4 acre field with just the drill. That field is rough. It was smooth before, but just the tracks from the 175 Massey made the head lands rough. It's fixed now. Won't do that again.
 
A cultimulcher is a great tool if you spring plow or seeding a hay field or pasture. I just don't favor them for other row cropping. I got rid of a 25 ft machine a couple years ago since we finally quit trying to work clay ground that was a tad too wet in the spring and then trying to salvage the mess (break up the clods)with the cultimulcher. Much prefer a rolling harrow which does a good job and also has the benefit that you can't use it if the ground is too wet (packs with dirt and becomes a solid roller).
