going to call vet tomorrow but was aking you all what you thought. I have an outside dog , ( doesn't run loose). she wont eat and hasn't for several days now. just not her self , collie'shepard mix. any thoughts? I know this is hard to guess but just was hoping someone might have an idea

What have you been feeding her? Strictly dog food? Human food? Sugary stuff from Christmas? Need more to go on.

Smell her breath,if it is worse than normal dog breath, she may have an absessed tooth or teeth. It may hurt her to eat. Try something soft and warm. Maybe give her a baby aspirin to help with any pain she is in. You may have a tough decision ahead of yourself. Glad I am not in your shoes. BTDT. gobble

How old of a dog? We had a dog like that and the wife stayed up all night with it every 15 minutes she would make it drink water and Gatorade. The next morning we cooked some eggs and she ate them and just got better from there. On the other hand your dog could have swallowed something and it could be stuck.

How old is she? It was a sad day but we had to put our pure bred 14-year-old collie down this June. Much as we loved him, we all agreed when getting him as s pup, there would be no vet heroics at the farm end. We still miss him greatly, but not nearly as much as his 9-year-old golden retriever "brother". He just mopes around the place depressed every day.

a friend had a dog the same way bad teeth removed almost all has to give soft food but a completly differnt dog vet bill was over 700 but she was special

my pit boxer would do that. At first vet thought it was from getting into some kind of poison. Said to make up a pound of hamburger to 4 cups cooked rice and force feed her for a few days. It worked a few times then we found out that she had a blood cancer. I wish you the best.

Have had several dog over the years and when they won't eat the first thing they will is scramble eggs. If she has a discharge get her to a vet. Do it NOW (tonight).

We know what you mean about the remaining dog being depressed. When we put our 14 1/2 year old lab down a few years ago, the 9 year old husky mix did that, wouldn"t eat or drink at all, just moped around. We finally got another dog for HER as we were not really ready for another dog yet but didn"t want to lose the husky too. She did come around with the help of the new younger dog. As to the op"s problem, I agree with the likelihood of tooth problems as we have been there before too.

Get her to the vet as soon as possible.

Its too hard to say what could be wrong. Had one dog do that when its stomach flipped. Had another dog, collie shephard, do that when its kidneys shut down. There are a lot of things that is symptoms of, none of them good, many of them curable. When my collie shephard's kidneys shut down, they gave hime a year to live tops. He lived five years very strong, until they really failed at the end. One of the best scrappers I ever had.

Get your dog to the vet as soon as possible.

Best of luck.

Had a collie/shepherd mix that quit eating. Ran to town for some parts, got back and he was moping around head down, real sluggish. Vet opened his glands and said he may have quit eating because it was hurting too much at the other end. Never did find out what happened.

If I sifted the oat meal out of the packet and mixed the powder with some water he'd drink it. Wouldn't touch anything else.

He was only a year and a half old.

I know you are worried (as I would be), but I have run into several occasions where a dog would feel bad for a few days and gradually get better. Dogs are like any other animal (I'm including humans here too) and will get sick from time to time and mostly it's not anything too bad. My father always says to give them sardines and if they won't eat that to take them to the vet. Same rule goes for hogs. When my grandfather had hogs, a can of sardines was sort of his litmus test. If the dog won't eat, something like sardines, hot dogs, viennas, potted meat, etc... will usually get them to eat. I'd take it to a vet, but dogs will bounce back pretty quickly most of the time.

A couple of years ago, my hound dog stopped eating and started acting not himself. On a Sunday morning, my Dad found him lying in the field and unwilling to come when called. I took him to a vet and a few days later he had surgery for an intussusception-his intestines had telescoped. Had I not found a vet open on a Sunday, he wouldn't have made it to Monday.

I go with scrambled eggs too if they seem to be off their feed. I'm a firm believer in vets. I'd rather look foolish than lose a dog. I can replace the money; dogs not so easy. Vets often find things we miss when doing routine things like updating shots. Keeping dogs is expensive; I have eight so I know, but so worth it. When they get hot after a rabbit it is music to my ears. The inside beagles are always happy when we get home and greet us accordingly.

Don't wait too long to see the vet.

Lots of possibilities. You need a vet to be as certain as possible. We have a 13 year old Brittany Spaniel that took to not eating about 2 years ago. She was getting weaker by the day. Vet ran test's and found it to be Canine Addisons Disease. A shot every 30 days, and she's as healthy as ever. It took about 3 days after the first shot and she was back to normal. (Shot sets us back $86 a month) She's the smartest dog I've ever been around and a great pet. One of the family. She watches over our grand kids when they're here. I'd do just about anything to keep her healthy.

Get her to a vet and get a blood sample. If poisoned by dog treats like 2 of mine, it will happen in just a few days and the blood test will show a complete breakdown of the digestive tract functions.

Mine came from rawhide chews wrapped with chicken from overseas. I know as my dogs were young and kept in a 40'x40' pen next to the house. Saw them every day. Took them for walks around the place frequently.

Thought the dogs would enjoy the chews. In less than a week both went from excellent health to hardly moving about.

I emailed the store where I bought them and got no answer as expected. I also asked the question if anybody had a problem with them and I found 11 www pages of people that had fed their dogs the same thing and had similar results.

Now I read what goes into my dogs mouths and if I like it that and table scraps are all they get.

my Lab mix had the same symptoms 2 years ago - lost over 5 pounds. It turned out to be Cushings Disease. 2 years later at 12 y.o. he runs and plays like a 5 y.o.
