Defrosting Deep Freeze

Pretty dumb question....

I'm defrosting our large deep freeze (in basement) today.
As chunks of ice drop off the freezer walls I have been
putting them in the utility sink, (I should just carry them
outside). Which will cost more: Let the chunks thaw.on
their own, or melt them with hot water? Both the furnace
and water heater are natural gas fired.

Ditto on just use cold tap water, it's practically free. You could close the drain on your utility sink, fill it with ice and water, then drain and refill it when the water cools to near freezing.

Step 1) Place ice in a bucket

Step 2) Throw the ice out the door!!!

Step 3) Worry about bigger energy cost/losses. LAMO
