Went to visit my parents yesterday. Said Hi to my grandparents and great-grandparents too. Wanted to visit my great-great grandparents down the road about a mile but the landwoner has put up a big gate with a keypad entry. Guess I need to find out the code.

We do something similar about once per year. Relatives are buried a couple hour hours from where I live but around where I grew up. Its a bit of a trip through history and sometimes you can find someone you weren't expecting like old neighbors, lost relatives and now that I'm pushing 60 I've found a few class mates that didn't make it to old age.

yeah, many burials before 1900 here. several marked "Citizen of the Republic of Texas". and in the back corner a hand made stone - "The slave of J. Smith"

Did the same thing this morning to my father and his brother my favorite uncle. Walked into my cousins corn field next to their resting spots and found two nice ears of corn to lay by their stones, for another harvest they missed and to celebrate a bountiful harvest for the year we had. chris

RE: find a grave - yep. between an uncle and I we've found all the ones in Texas on my Mother's side. the one I need to find is my Great grandfather on my Dad's side. he was captured by Santa Anna's Army on the Santa Fe expedition and imprsoned in Mexico when he was 17. came back to Texas, married and fathered my grandfather at 67. His grave is in a small cemetary in a field in Milam County, TX. Everyone who could tell me where it is has passed.

Do they have a Historical Society in Milam County, TX? If they do, you might get some help locating the cemetery. Our county Historical Society has details on cemeteries that I didn't even know existed.

Also - have you ever fooled around with Ancestry.com?

Another place to find tidbits of info is RootsWeb.

Is Lloyd C. your father's name? Don't answer if it makes you uncomfortable.

no, not a Roberts. The graves in the second pic are mine, McCord - gp's, Young - p's, and Allen - ggp's. I just took that picture for the view.Rolling hills and oaks. The Lawhon the springs are named for is an ancestor too.

I haven't gone to the courthouse in Milam Co. but haven't been able to find on-line as to the location. He died in 1891. I was at the cemetery as a kid, just a few graves. It is fun digging into that stuff. Some of the old family stories don't stand up too good on further review though.

Good luck with your ancestral search. Having been to the graveyard when you were a kid would really bug me, ha.

Old stories - yeah - but new ones pop up too. I recently found an old prohibition era newspaper article about my wife's grandpa on her mom's side, being arrested for operating a whiskey still. We knew that her grandpa on her dad's side made whiskey, but this was news to us.
