SC CASE...No Spark

My SC CASE has been stored in a dry machine shed for four
years. In trying to start it it has no spark. Tractors started/
ran pefectly when parked. It is not getting spark. I
removed the kill switch wire to rule that out. What is the
most likely reason for no spark (magneto)?

Thank you,
Glenn F.

Most of the time if you have no spark it can be these things to check.
1. points (gap)and condenser check them to see if they are seat and opening.
2. Rotor and cap look for mositure and water that might stop it from sparking.
3. Spark plug wires and spark plugs: make sure they are all in to the dist. cap and check to make sure they are dry. Spark plug check to make sure they are clean and gap.
4. Coil make sure that the connection to the dist. cap is a good clean connection.
5. Most Magnetos have a limited spark and the worst thing is to do is to pull the magneto off the tractor engine. You can over haul a magneto as it is on the tractor engine it is usally the best way to go.

put tractor in neutral, engage the clutch then take dist cap off and rotate to where the points are closed. Push them open with ign switch on and see if it generates a nice blue arc. Then rotate the engine with the belt pulley and see if the points fire like they should. Belt pulley is on same side as mag or dist depending on your tractor. Kind of hand way to fix and adjust points.

That's what I suspect. Are the points on a Wico mag easy to get at once the "distributer cap" is removed? I have never worked on one.

Glenn

I'll bet you a case of beer the points need cleaned or replaced. Almost any time an engine is shut down the points are closed so they sit there and corrode and corroded points do not conduit electricity so no conduction not spark

Rub the points with some 320 or 400 grit wet or dry until they're shiny then see if you have fire to your plugs. If this is the original mag your magnets may be getting weak from age. Touch them with a flat blade screwdriver to see if they will attract that screwdriver with a lot effort.

If you need to pull that mag make a sketch where your rotor is pointing. THEN DON'T MOVE THE ENGINE. When you're ready to reinstall the mag rotate the rotor to the spot shown in your sketch
and your mag should be in time. Hal

I had the very same thing happen today as Glenn F. My '52 SC ran great two years ago when I parked it in an open but dry shed. I pulled the mag cap and brushed all contact areas with a stainless tooth brush. No spark. I've never had to touch this mag in my whole resto history. Thanks, C.
ps Been away from ytmag for years...
