Re-telling a joke

A man goes to a mechanic and asks about how to set the points on his tractor. Mechanic asks the man if he has a feeler gauge. Man says "no I don't" Then the mechanic tells him he can set the gap, by using a dime. It is .05 thick, but it will work. The next day the man stops in to talk to the mechanic again. He still can not get it to run. The mechanic asks him if he used the dime, as instructed. "No, I did not have a dime, so I used two nickels."

Reminds me of back years ago when I worked at a Ford dealership.
The management hired a new (COLLAGE BOY)service manager.
This new service manager ask me if I would mind installing a new set of points in a customers vehicle.
I said I would.
He thin pulled the vehicle into my service bay and got out and left it running.
I ask him to shut off the engine so I could put in the ignition points.
He said not to shut the engine off because the battery was very weak and we would have to jump start it.
I told him I was pretty fast, but I won't that fast to put them in while running. LOL...
That was a long time ago ! Gees , I am getting old !!

Wonder if they even cover point and condenser type ignitions in tech school today? Or would that be an optional chapter?

Last time I talked to an automotive student I was told they no longer cover points type ignition systems or carbs. That's because they are seldom seeing them in a shop. On the carbs it's to the point on most that it's cheaper to get a reman than it is to rebuild by the book which includes installing new choke and throttle shaft bushings and reaming them to fit, when paying labor. Keep in mine that most cars were IE by 76-77.

Last time I looked at a flat rate manual they gave the shop 8 hours to remove, disassemble, rebuild, install and adjust a Quadra-jet. At the time we were charging 55 an hour. It gave you an hour to remove an install/adjust a reman. The reamn was 200 bucks customer cost. So 8 hours at 55 an hour comes to 440 dollars plus the customer cost for the rebuild kit (good quality one) was about 50 bucks so call it 500 as opposed to 255 total for a reman. Just looking out for the customer it was best to go with a reman.

Well, they should still teach at least the basics of fuel/air mixtures and points ignitions. Too many of the younger set of "mechanics" have NO IDEA what to do when the engine won't start and the scan tool does not tell them what to do. I have a friend that operates his own shop. He calls me in every time he gets stumped. Most times it is an older type system that he has never seen. The problem is that like many of the newer generation, he does not know the basics of what it takes to make an engine run.
