New Holland 489 Haybine

Hey Dad and I are thinking about upgrading our haybine. We currently run a 7' New Holland haybine that is getting worn out and we would like to upgrade. We would like to get a 9' haybine that is New Holland made, and are looking at getting a 489 for sale locally.

What are the pros and cons of this haybine?

What are the years of production for this haybine?

I would rather get a disk mower but Dad wants to be able to mow with the little tractor and does not want to spend that much money.

Thanks in advance for the responses. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!

The NH 489 was a fairly good haybine but you need to be careful. First check the rubber on the crusher rollers and if you see any sign that the rubbers is starting to check or come loose back away quicky. To replace the crusher rolls would cost over $2500. Next, the 489 was known to develpe problems with the gear box and it also is expensive and difficult to repair . For a beter NH haybine look for a model 488.
Personally I would not buy a NH 489. Good Luck

A good machine. The latest ones are over 25 years old at this time. Everything needs to be inspected. Drive line, wobble assembly, conditioning rolls, frame, and tongue. The biggest problem is the hinge area of the tongue can break over time especially if it is not lubricated but other damage can happen. I am looking for an upgrade for a mower conditioner and the 489 is high on the list given its selling price versus the latter New Hollands. The nice things about the disc units is faster ground speed and they are a little more rock tolerant.
A 489 with stub guards would be a good find.

I've got a 489, bought it used in 2005, yes the rolls have some spots missing like others have said, and I had the gearbox rebuilt in 2010, other than that it's been a pretty good machine for me. Good luck.

The 489 was a great machine, it was a much better machine than the 488.On the 489 only the cutterbar and real float not the whole header like a 488,this is a much better feature if you have rocks. The 489 was the deluxe machine and was replaced by the 492 then 1495.I had a 7ft 474 which is the same as a 489 for years with no problems.I never liked the reel drive on the far end of a 488 it was just more shields sticking out that are usually bent up.There was some gearbox issues but most should have been replaced or rebuilt by know.

I've had both a 488 and a 489. 488 is by far easier to maintain and in my opinion the better swather. I lujed the independent floating head on the 489 but in good hay the shaf ts for the conditioning rolls and sickle gear box would wrap with hay. It was a pita. I would go 488.

if you have rough ground or a lot of groundhog holes you will break the bolts that hold the tongue on. it should be illegal to build a machine with the pto shaft hidden in the tongue.

What kind of loot are you looking to spend? Personally I would look for a 1465 if you're looking for a cutter bar machine. Got rid of a 489 and replaced it with a 1465 and would not take a 489 back if I was paid to take it. The 489 will get the job done but the 1465 will do it a gear faster. Oh and not matter which one you decide on, put stub guards on it.

3 times I have parked my disc mower ,and discbine and gone back to a worn out 489,,disc are great , until they need repairs ,,then son !!! ,,. I need a wobble box for my 489,i can spend 50 bux on partsand a morning tunin up my 489 ,,. and run all season,..

We have both a 479 and 489. Only used the 489 for one year so far. Does a nice job. The head appears to float nicer, but I don"t notice any difference in the actual cut quality. The 489 has an SCH knife system on it. Only difference I notice is that the SCH system costs a little more to replace parts on. Both give next to no trouble. Just replace the occasional section and guard. I much prefer the 479/488 design. I"m just waiting for the 489 sickle gearbox to blowup. The 479 just cuts and cuts and cuts. Sickle belts are a b!tch to replace on the 479, never had to do it on a 489. So overall both have been VERY good for us, but the 489 gear box scares me.

Have to say I've been impressed with the old 479 I bought a few years ago. Think I have cut three crops with it and that thing cuts better than anything I have ever seen. It is very well used and needed sickles and guards. Rubber on the rollers is getting well worn and the table was rusted through behind the cutter bar when I got it.
