Your favorite Christmas Eve memories

When our children were small,we always went to the barn Christmas eve, just before their bed time. Just something very special on that night of nights to watch the cattle peacefully chewing their cuds and the sows quietly nursing their young under the heat lamps! Extra special if it was snowing out. My favorite memory.

Our oldest daughter was about 3, (she's 35 now). A neighbor came over about 7:30 Christmas Eve and walked around the outside of the house jingling some sleigh bells. We heard it inside and told her to listen, I hear something. She heard it and said "It's Santa!!" We told her he was checking to see if she was asleep so he could bring her presents. She ran into her bed and jumped in, was asleep in under 10 minutes. Neighbors came in and visited for a while and then left. Was a nice quiet Christmas Eve.

Back in the late 80's I lived in Jacksonville, Florida.
Christmas Eve we got about a 1/4 inch of ice, and then snow.
My son had never seen snow in his life. Neither had our black lab.
They both had an absolute ball playing in the snow Christmas morning!

When I was a kid...

Mom always made oyster stew on Christmas eve. Next we got to open one present...it was a new outfit to wear to the Christmas Eve Candlelight service at church. Next the hustle and bustle of mom and dad trying to get 6 unruly kids ready for church. Then off to the Candlelight service, which was always so beautiful and the old country church was packed back in those days.

Then home for a snack and off to bed in anticipation of Christmas Day.

Ditto on the barn/animal thing.

Nothing like the smell of alfalfa hay, cattle, and "dairy" on a -20º winter evening!

And I don"t mean that in a "bad" way!

We milked cows, bedded them down later, then off to Midnight Mass.

I was born in 1957, those days (60"s) sure were a LONG time ago!

The year I remember , I was a Freshman in High School. I received a Marlin 22 rifle for Christmas and it was the best gift ever. It was bittersweet though as my parents were in the midst of a nasty divorce. Dad and I were alone on the farm and my brothers were with my Mother far away in the city. The neighbors invited us to dinner or it would have been TV dinners. I spent Christmas Day feeding cattle and chopping ice on the pond for them to drink. Found a few hours late in the day to hunt with my new rifle. Dad is gone now and also the cattle but the rifle is here in the corner. Merry Christmas to all of you.

Not overly cheery, but here goes.

In the service, the married men had priority on getting Christmas eve/day to spend with their families.

I have stood probably two or three times more Christmas duties, just to allow these guys to be with their families.

On a day or so after Christmas, I got thanked by being welcomed to a home that was helped by me standing watch, and got served home-made broccoli casserole.

Best ever.

D.
