Canadian Ken and RMOMN discussed tach drive gear replacement on their respective JD's.I am about to do the gears on my 520.Saw Kens directions and the go along pretty well with directions inJD50 serv. man.with the exception of the tach gears as the didn't have any .Was wondering why pull the freeze plug??Got both new nylon gears(they are the same as yours)and new freeze plug. What holds the top gear in place when you put whole assy. back in housing??Both nylon gears in mine are munched!!Am also going to have my tach rebuilt. Before I start this project can I start the tractor and move it with out hurting rest of governor??What problems should a novice look out for as I have never done anything with a governor before.Thanks---B0ob

I would think if you have the gear for the drive removed, just tape over the hole and run the tractor..

I would not leave the good gear in place if I were going to run it without the Tach-drive in place..

When you are ready to put it all back together, be sure to put the tach-Drive shaft on before you tighten down the Tach..
Otherwise, you will have a fight to get the flex-drive in place..!!

Ron,I havn't pulled gov apart yet and broken old top gear is still in there.Gear broke off right where cable stem hooks up.Bottom gear is also bad.Have to move tractor to shop so I wondered if that broken top gear flopping around down in there is going to hurt anything else down there when I move it??If I pull that side plug, can I get the broken part of the top gear out thru there??I know I have to pull whole shaft out yhe other side to replece bottom gear.Maybe I could explain better if someone gave me a call on my LL. Call collect if need be.(360-376-4689)Thanks for the info from anyone,I need the help and advice from someone in the know---Bob

The plastic gear for the Flex-cable should come out the top.
If it is messed up bad, you may need to tease it and use Needle-Nosed pliers of the likes to get the pieces out.
I am surprised the drive gear is bad..
