mom always made a fruit cake at Christmas and we had
a neighbor that always did what mom would do. mom
made hers from good ingredients while the neighbor
would improvise and then always wonder why hers was
not as good as moms. one year in the early 60's
neighbor ask mom if her fruitcake was spicey hot.
mom said no so they compared recipes. recipe called
for 1/2 cup butter; seem s neighbor did not have
butter so she used sausage dripping instead. still
a good laugh after all of these years. by the way;
first Christmas without mom. enjoy yours.

Kind of reminds me of when I was a kid. I was hooked on pop corn. Used to pop it in a cast iron frying pan with a splash of cooking oil. Well one time we were out of oil so tried bacon grease. Was not the same!

Hmmmmm-- I thought bacon and/or the drippings/grease always enhanced the flavor of whatever it was added to. Shucks; another myth BUSTED!! Armand

December 7, 1975.
Was dating my 1st wife.
Her sister made me brownies for my b-day.
They were hard as rock.
The recipe called for vanilla.
She used vanilla......ice cream.

Thanks for the memory.

Merry Christmas....don t. ....

quality home made fruit cakes are delicious. sliced and stored in freezer it keeps all year. christmas would not be the same without one.
