So how do ya repair this?

Ordered a new shift boot/Dust cover for the D-17. Looked at old one and it seems the gear shift knob has no intentions of giving up it's position. Spins around like a cat chasing it's tail, but stays home. Surely the new boot won't stretch over the knob! I suppose I'm missing something - beside a brain!

Did you look under the base of the knob for a setscrew? Usual for most non threaded knobs. (except for the IH rubber biscuit) Jim

Knob is nothing but rubber....top of the shifter is a steel ball. Rubber has to stretch to fit over the ball. Similar to B, C, CA, WD45, unlike WC, WD, WF, which were screwed on or fit a knurled straight shaft.

in other words warm it up and pull. It looks like a good candidate for reshaping and threading after removal. (I hate wiggley rotating knobs) Jim

Arrrgh, the memory!
Fourtyfive years ago at school we had an old lathe which had a few of those loose knobs. Yuck.

Merry Christmas!
