more pto generator safety and tsc is worthless

Gave in to buickanddeere and went to tsc and family farm and home today looking for a guard/shield for the pto shaft. Nothing. It seems like more often than not when I go in these places to get something, I leave empty handed. Tsc had a couple complete shafts and ffh only had shaft parts. Went to tsc to get coolant a couple weeks ago, didn't have any. Went there in September to get some twine, already sent it back to the warehouse. They only seem to sell pet food, common bolts, and clothes that don't even fit me. (Wear 34-36 pants). Hydraulic parts are scarce, and most of what they sell is low quality. I usually go to our local napa or deere dealer to get what I need. Disappointing.

I did look for generator switches too, but everything generator realted is sold out in the area due to the weather. Thanks to everyone for the helpful hints and entertainment. Time to search the net for what I need I guess.

Nick,

I know what you mean about not being able to find what you need at tsc. Does not seem to matter what it is exactly. I think it comes from catering too much to seasonal buyers. I once told the manager of our local tsc as I left her store with a frown on my face that I bet I could walk through her store and count at least 200 empty bins (out of stock) items. She did not take the bet.

Something I have learned over the years. No matter how many safety things you can put on any thing no matter what a person can still get hurt. So what I am saying is the only true and good safety device is between your ears. Seen more then one guy get hung up on a PTO shield due to if hanging up when it should not have done so so the guy got hurt any how

I know the feeling at TSC. I know the manager and sales folks at the local one for near 20 years. This local manager feels a frustrated as the customers.
TSC made them upgrade to a new larger store last year. The manager says the egg heads from TSC tell him what he can stock and how many of that item.
He says they have to deal with stuff that was never a problem in the old store. Formerly they would order fast moving in season things like mower guards by the pallet load. Very handy when you wanted to rebuild an entire cutter bar assy. Now TSC corporate says the average guard sale is 4 units, so some egg head with letters behind his name only allows them to stock 4 of each model guard. Really great thinking for the guy wanting to replace an entire set of guards or if you walk in 5 minutes after the last guy bought all four and emptied the bin. Reorder and wait 2 weeks for the truck. :(

Yep,the TSC in Ionia is bigger than the one in Greenville, but all that means is that they have twice as much nothing.

You may never find a shield for your shaft unless you know what make it is.No two mfgs. are going to be the same.A new or used complete shaft may be the only answer.

Greenville TSC actually seems to have a "pair" of something when I need it.
The one in Ionia would sell you a boot or a glove and not have the mate.
Let alone a pair of hydraulic hose fittings or two matched cylinders.
Too bad too, because the folks running the store are nice people.

There are several TSC within a 40 miles radius of me and some are better than others. The one closet to me always have a large assortment of hydraulic hoses, fittings and a large amount of PTO shafts and parts.Of course they are lacking in some areas but where else do you go on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday to get something when you break down? The old Central Tractor/Farm &Family stores had more farm stuff but they went bankrupt so you can't blame TSC for wanting to appeal to folks that want to spend $$$$ and that usually means suburban and horse types.

It's funny you say that. I went there a while ago to
get a couple adapters from pioneer to deere, they
had one. Said it'd be a month before they got
another one.

I have not tired this, but I bet you could make a guard from PVC pipe if you can find one that will slide into the other. Some times the guard will even come lose and about get you.

TSC sucks. Only thing I buy there is bolts and hydraulic oil. Engine oils can be had cheaper at walmart across the street. 1 whole aisle devoted to OLD tractor parts. While I like my old tractors, not many farm with them on a daily basis. My local one also stocks 1 or 2 of everything. A friend of mine works there, and says the break room is full of nonsense about "out here" and life in the country, while they peddle crappy knick knacks and john deere licensed crap. I think its all about their bottom line. Rant over.

I dont go to TSC hardly at all due to the reasons above, basically not having what I need, and higher prices. I go to the new Family Farm and Home as they have a much better selection of twine, guards, knives, sprockets, pulleys, and hydraulic and three point stuff. Basically a much better tractor aisle, and more stuff in the entire store also. Much nicer store than TSC. The Plainfield store has more than Newaygo, but still beats TSC.

They opened a TSC last year. In the town down the road. I hear it is already in trouble.Sales are not what they should be.I went in (no other choice in town).Looked like a bomb had gone off inside. No service and a dirty store.

Maybe that"s why I had such a problem getting guards a few seasons back. Started stockpiling them - bought a few every time I went in. They finally got a few more in stock after that stunt... I got a DRUM mower this summer. It takes blades like a disk mower. TSC only stocks a couple packages of ones that can be used on my machine. So now I"m stockpiling them... Two can play at that game. Reminds me of the commercial where the daughter is seeing an objectionable boy so she invites a more objectionable boy,,, She says "two can play at that game!"

To tag on Old's comment..."If you make something idiot proof the world will respond by making better idiots"....explains a lot about what's happening in our country. and yes remember nothing is idiot proof 'cause idiots are so ingenious. Didn't a fellow named Darwin write something about survival of the fittest and selective pressure on breeding populations?

He can almost certainly find a replacement shield. ONE place to call would be Baum Hydraulics in Omaha. If he can describe what he has and they can figure out what it is, there's a good chance they can supply him with a shield.

Nick:

On THIS site (YT), left column, "Marketplace - Tractor Parts" , they sell PTO Shaft Guards.

Or Google: PTO Shaft Guards

Good Luck & have a Happy Holidays

That's not what I said or meant, his gen is 30-40 yrs.old or older and if the power shaft is the same then you would need to know maybe whose shaft it is and almost no one(TSC-NAPA-Farm Fleet or like)is going to have something in stock.A shield will run 30 to 80 Dollars depending on make,a COMPLETE PTO shaft will run around 300 give or take.Or you can find a good used one for the price of the shield. Some times it is better to bite the bullet then mess around and it still not be right.

I shop the Greenville, TX. TSC and usually get what I want. There
are 4 in my general area and sometimes they are low on stock on
some things. I think it depends upon the management.

I do feel that stock is allowed to dwindle after Christmas as the
state has an inventory tax for Jan 1 and if it's not in inventory it
doesn't get taxed.

A lot of attention is paid to Equine associated items. Big market
in this area for "Hosses".

Don't know why you placed such a sarcastic reply Bill. Do you own or work for TSC?
My take on the Tractor Supply Stores are that they are a corporate company specializing in JUNK.
Yes you can buy dog food and horse feed and some hardware there but few or NO TRACTOR SUPPLIES.
I just go to the tractor dealers or buy it wholesale if it is a general purpose item like a pto sheild. Do a google surch and you will find the sheild that you need.

Ditto. I was trying to point out what TSC's attitude is toward us farmers. I wouldn't walk across the street to go to a TSC but, as it turns out, I don't have any close by anyway. There's one down south near Moscow-Madison that caters to horsey people. Our motto "up here" is: "If you can't get it at Fleet Farm you don't need it." (;>))

You got that right Bill. In Appleton we've got a huge fleet farm and they still have a good selection of farm stuff, as well as the horse, dog, electrical, plumbing, automotive, sporting goods, hunting& fishing licenses, clothing, tools, etc...

You can have new tires put on your truck while you shop (a dangerous ploy to some) and get some bale twine, farm toys for a birthday or Christmas gift, dog food,a new t shirt, and maybe a fishing pole and some cashews to snack on.

Fleet farm. The man's mall.

May not be kosher but, I have used a rope from the grain augor to the tractor going around things and maybe a pulley or two going to a wire wraped around the coil wire. Test it a time or two. I have put two ropes one on each side of the pto shaft. And I have stumbled into it at night! Vic

I'll take every source I can get nowadays
internet, dealer, NAPA, TSC....
They recently opened a tsc 20 miles closer than the one I
used to go to.
very handy
do they have everything I need...all the time? nope
Do they have some tractor stuff I need right NOW...on the
weekend, when others are closed? yep
Glad they are there sometimes.

tip: I have to go there a lot for feed, meds, bolts, etc.
I take a swing thru the tractor stuff.
I work on a lot of brands and know part numbers, so if I see 295 or 437 plugs, etc are out, or a various oil filter is out, I stop by the desk and ask them to re-order. Then it'll get restocked and will be there when I need it next time :D

"Safety third" theory
All the safety rules and even the phrase "safety first" actually combine to give a person a false sense of safety, thereby putting them at higher risk of injury through inattentiveness.

Yep seen so many safety devices end up getting people hurt that it is not funny. Only one true safety device that works and that is between a person ears

Mike Rowe has caught a lot of heck over that little comment over the years, but mostly from "safety professionals" who have "safety first" beat into their heads so bad they don't get that personal safety is a personal responsibility.

Like the safety officer in the big gravel pit on a hot day, when they were a couple hundred yards from any equipment, everyone was on lunch break, and he took his brain bucket off to eat lunch.

Ya that hard hat one is your on the property so you have to have the hat on even if it would take a act of God for him to get hit by any thing other then something falling out of the sky. Like the Gov agency OHSA which in many cases is joke in it self
