Hey guys, I have a 04 f250 that is missing at idle and when it's under load and taking off. It seems to me to be acting like one of the coil over plugs is shot (new plugs last year). The check engine light is on so I'm waiting for the garage to get back to me with the codes. anyone have this problem before? Should I use motorcraft parts or are there any aftermarket COP's? thanks for the help, Anthony

Generic code for a random misfire will be PO300.

HOPEFULLY, it has set a individual cylinder code, PO401 thru PO308, which will point right to the specific cylinder.

I used genuine Ford coils for a number years, now have been using generic parts store ones with OK results.

A Ford dealership partsman told me some years ago when they had trouble with a coil or two on a Mustang they typically would replace them with an ACCEL set of all 8. He said that was one brand that was even better than OEM, at that time, he said some aftermarket ones were NOT as good as OEM.

I haven't had that trouble with my F350, but did with my wife's Taurus. It does sound like one of your coils has died. Can't tell you if there are good aftermarket COP's (probably are, by now), since we had the Taurus serviced by a Ford dealer.

I knew someone with a Navigator with a cyl. miss and it was something serious as it did not have compression in that cyl.
Certain years of those Ford's are big time problems.

Where you having problems with misfires before you changed the plugs?

Most likely it is a COP - they might last 200K but if you had issues with the plugs it can easily lead to issues with the coil.

MSD makes some good ones, AC DELCO COIL DG508 are very good for the price (about $20 each) Performance Distributors makes one for $8 each while the OEM COPs are about $50

If you've already done plugs, which it sounds like you have, then it's probably a coil. Very common. I do lots of them...

i know the 5.4 had an issue with spark plug torque but unsure what years were involved, hope you don't experience a blowout with one.

I've been thinking of getting the ACCEL brand from Amazon for my 2004 Ford 5.4 and replace when I do the plugs.
Pretty good reviews.

If you do anything before the garage gets back with the codes, you might as well start a fire and throw your money in it. How can you fix it if you don't know what is broke? Might as well go p!ss on an electric fence, it will do just as much good.

My '01 F-150 (4.6 v-7, don't ask Ford says "they're all that way no warranty coverage") has ate two of them since new, it's currently at 150,000 miles.

My son had problems with plug wires. Do not forget to check that. After 2 sets of aftermarket wires; he took it to a Ford dealer; bought factory equiptment (heavier than aftermarket); no more problem. Sold truck @ 200,000 plus miles; still see it running around at times.

Almost certain it's cop or the plug on the wiring harness but I did lose the driver module in the computer on mine. I've lost 3 cop's on mine, best seem to be ford ones, I get them at the scrap yard out of crown Vic's.

Mis-fire indicators will pin point the cylinder are look into mode 6 for the history....

Using a good scanner you can freeze the event and play it back...

Plugs, use OEM on the coils its your call... If its a triton 3valve research what you are getting into changing the plugs...

If yours is the same as mine 06 with a 5.4 and you do the plugs and thier.the ones that break off! Take the.truck to ford pay them the money to change plugs! Or you will be like me try to save a few hundred and have a 7 year gm mechanic do it break the back on off under the cab and then break his tap off trying to remove.the.broken piece and still end up goin to ford to have them remove.the.cab and motor head to get tap out and end up with a bill of 2200! Ford told me air wrench will buzz them right out with about 90 percent chance they wont break!

They will break no matter what . I have done hundreds of these . with air tools , with out , cold, hot ,lubed unlubed. It don"t matter , one truck you may get them all out , next you break them all . With the extractor tool it"s not that bad of a deal if you break them . Three to four hours . .
