Somebody ought to be buggy whipped...........

Wife and daughter came home Sunday evening with a surprise for me.....Now understand we've currently got a female Chihuahua, a male Lab, and a turtle, so I've been very adamant in saying that we needed, "NO MORE ANIMALS". Now imagine being faced with one of the cutest little faces you've ever seen in the form of yet another puppy.

Seems my wife and daughter had stopped at the grocery store on the way home and there was a box sitting at the edge of the parking lot close to where they parked. My daughter looked at/in the box an there inside sat this little puppy. Seems some sorry individual had pretty much thrown this puppy away. What they did was write "Free to a good home" inside the box, and also the word Chorkie (which we assume means it's a cross between a Chihuahua and a Yorkie...and it does have a bit of the look of both). Too, it's old/big enough to eat soft dog food, but still so small that it's maybe twice as big as your hand. In other words, size wise it fits that type of small breed also.

The one thing in the sorry individuals favor is that they left a plastic coffee can half full of food for it. Fortunately we've also had a warm spell the past few days, with temps in the high 60's to low 70's, so at least he didn't freeze to death. The bad thing is it has been pouring down rain all afternoon and the poor little guy was soaking wet. Once back here he acted like he was starving, and had it not been for the rain, he would probably have been dehydrated also, as there's no telling how long he had been left out there.

I guess I've just got a soft spot for underdogs and mutts, especially ones as cute as this one. I'm guessing the reason this one got thrown out is that it appears to have been born a 'bobtail', and if it's the cross-breed stated in the box it should have a regular tail. Wife's going to take it to the vet first of the week to have it checked out, but right off he seemed to be healthy, no fleas or other parasites readily apparent, nor any sign of Parvo or anything like that. The best thing is that the other two dogs seemed to be very accepting of the little fellow. The Chihuahua even seemed to be taking somewhat of a motherly, protective posture with him, even though she has never had puppies of her own.

Ultimately the best dogs I have ever had have always been mutts, so I guess I'm having high hopes for this little guy from the word go.....whether I wanted another dog or not....LOL I guess when it comes to animals I just have a soft spot.... but when it comes to humans, I will never understand the mentality of a person that would leave a puppy like this just setting in a box in a parking lot, expecting/hoping that someone would see it. In this day and age of the computer, Facebook, Craigslist, etc, etc, etc, there are way too may ways for someone to find a good home for a puppy...especially one as cute as this one... In my opinion a person sorry enough to just throw on out like this (even thought it was in a box with 'free food' too) ought to be taken out back and whipped with a buddy whip until a little 'sense' is whipped into them............because I have no soft spot for sorry idiots, and there's just no excuse for anyone treating a puppy like this...... when doing it the right way would be just as easy............

Good for you folks . I simply despise those animals that drop pets off along highways or dispose of them inhumanely because they don't want them . I had a similar experience years ago . My neighbor lady walked into my house one evening with a small kitten that someone droppped off along the roaad . So since I'm also a sofety for cute little eyes staring at me , I took it in .This took place a few weeks after my wife of 33 yrs walked out on me for the adultrous life style , so having a housemate was nice . The next day i was telling my Pastor about the kitten & he said : on I'd like to have a kitten so tell her if she happens to find another one that I want it .So I mentioned it to the neighbor lady . Golly gee , a couple nites later , in she walks with another small kitten . I called the Pastor & I could not believe what he said .He said oh I was just kidding . I don't wanta cat . Just let it go maybe someone else will find it before it gets hit by a car . Well , I then owned 2 kittens . I'm a pet lover . God bless those animal rescue organizations who actually save lives .Ken

Good for you as I write this I have a chihuahua mix in my lap, runt of litter, born with only one eye, best dog I ever had, cute, entertaining, smart, lovable lapcat. Enjoy the new member of your household.

One of the best dogs we ever had was adopted from a parking lot just like that. Agree they need to be throttled. At least it's safe and warm now, even if you do find it another home it will be taken care of. We watch the animal cops Detroit once in a while. Live 30 miles from the city but know it pretty well. A couple times I've come close to going for a ride and finding some of the butt heads that mistreat defenseless pets. Good for you and Merry Christmas.

There not just pets, their part of the family. They have feeling, love and hurt just like us. I hate to hear when a person does something cruel to a animal

While not a dog, I do have a shtzu (spelling), the best most loving pet I ever had was a stray kitten I picked up. When I saw it I called and it came to me so I took it home. It always seemed to me that after the hard live he had lived up to that time he appreciated the life he then had and showed it by being the most loving pet I ever had.

Well LETS see??? Eight dogs and ten cats NOW. Plus two grand kids a lot of the time. I guess we are softies for animals too. LOL

The dumbest dogs I have owned have been purebred dogs. The smartest Heinz 57s.

Good luck with the new watch dog!!!

I have always reviled anyone who would abandon a pet. Once years ago I witnessed a woman drive away from a puppy in a remote area. I assumed that she had just dumped him. I got her liscense plate no. and called the cops. When they investigated, turns out that she had been trying to catch the dog and take it home!! Boy did I feel foolish!

i cant understand either how people can just abandon an animal. heres two abandons that are at our house. kitten just wandered in, somebody dumped it and drove away. same with the rabbit. cute little holland lop.

I've always been of the opinion that dogs should rule the world. They instinctively know who can be trusted and who can't. They give their love unconditionally. My dogs are never disappointed to see me.

It's also my opinion that people who don't like dogs also don't like themselves or other people.

Fastest ways to get on my bad side; Do harm to 1. children, 2. old people, and 3. dogs. We're supposed to protect 'em and make their lives BETTER when and where we can.

I hear you. I was a town dog catcher for a couple of years. People wouldn't turn a dog they didn't want in to me so I could either find a home for it or humanely dispose of it, but the a$$%!les would dump a puppy off on the side of the road in sub-zero weather and think nothing of it. Grrrrrrrrrrr! I like the idea of buggy whipping them. I also like the idea of staking them out naked in a 36 degree rain for about 12 hours. (smile)

I was at that awkward age from the late 80's thru the early 2000's where I was on a first name basis with every undertaker in the towns my far flung family lived in. Most of the family were old farmers and still had pets. It only seemed natural to the remaining family that I should be given GrandPa's dog or Auntie's cat, you name it. Add my 2 young kids to this and my place was a circus for years! I've always had a shelter dog or drop off, these seem to be the best ones. Former wife was tolerant of them, she is a "townie" and her Father didn't care for animals as such she didn't grow up with them or understand them. Kept telling her 'they're just another kid'. Things have settled down now, with the wife gone and 1 grown kid at home, all I have is Leggie dog who has enough crazy for 3 dogs! I still prefer a decent dog over most people!

Best dog I ever had was left beside an oil well I took care of. I fed it one day was not even out of high school was living at home could not take it home. Next day checked the well went back to my truck and he was in the seat tried to get him out and he grawed at me could not get him out of the truck. Went on with him in my truck I would get out he would follow every stop I made all day got home explained it to my very soft dad he was ok with the dog. Left him ouside with the other strays dad had brought home. My sister was taking night school and was not home when I brought him in she came home later that night and came screaming in the back door there was a mean dog at the front door not letting her on the front porch, He won mom over that night and was one of the best dog we ever had.

You obviously did the right thing. Post us a picture if you get time. I always enjoy your posts, I live a couple of counties over, between Statesville and Winston-Salem.

NCWayne, when I was a kid, if I misbehaved I was beaten with a rawhide-wrapped fiberglass buggy whip. That's how MOM punished us. Dad brought out his grandfather's razor strop and wasn't afraid to use it, either. And this was in the 1960's. If the punishment raised whelps on your body, that just meant that you'd remember the lesson longer...or such was the theory. Damned if I can remember what I got any of those beatings for, but I damn sure remember the beatings themselves.

So any mention of using a buggy whip in that fashion immediately makes me raise an eyebrow. And after all these years, to me it's still no joking matter.
