Sometimes you wish you were a Trooper!

Hey folks.

Twice this week as I was coming home from my shop (where my tractors are stored) on dark snowy roads I came upon vehicles stopped and facing oncoming traffic with bright lights on.

These people were doing this to avoid having to walk to their mailbox.

Call me a crank but if I was a State Trooper I would have given these persons a ticket on the spot.

am I unreasonable about this? This was on a 2 lane state route not a remote dirt road.

Brad

Yep that irritates me too. Around here you can drive in the fog with no headlights, change lanes without signaling or drive like a bat outta he!! and your OK with the cops, But drive without a seatbelt and they will make a U turn in rush hour traffic and run you down.

Ya I love those kinds! Lol, in my lane headed toward me getting there mail from there car, to lazy to walk out and get the mail. I have to go over the yellow line around them, and they give me a dirty look??

My neighbor does it one better. His mailbox is on the same side of the road as his driveway is, about 20 feet beyond his driveway based on the direction he normally comes home from, so he drives beyond his driveway, does a U-turn in the road and pulls up to his mailbox in the wrong lane as you describe. It"s a busy blacktop and it"s a wonder he hasn"t caused a crash.

Done around here all the time even during the nicest weather. Hard to believe people are so lazy they can't stop in the driveway and walk over to the mail box. Certainly seen several that desperately need the exercise

Funny thing is, the mailman delivers the mail, on the shoulder headed the wrong way, hope the State Trooper Brad is not around.lol gobble

Yeah my wife and I do that all the time but we are not on a big road. My pet reeve is those d*md fog lights. Some people turn them on when they buy the car and leave them on til they burn out or I catch them parked.

Do that every day... but the mail box is off the road enough to be out of the lane anyway. Personally I don't see what the big deal is whether you see the front or the back of the vehicle when it's pulled over...

While this may not be the smartest thing to do, this is a place to use parking lights. I believe most vehicles still have them, but I never see them in use. Minds seem to be small enough any more that all they can do is think about themselves!

FWIW- I was going to work in the Troop car one morning about 4AM. Came onto a guy delivering newspapers doing just what you said, in the wrong lane. The poor schmuck was doing his best to feed his family, so I didn't give him a ticket, he IS working ya know. But I did tell him about a special on revolving yellow hazard lights on sale at a local auto parts place. Saw him a couple weeks later with the light and fog lamps instead of head lamps on.

A few years ago not too far from me, an older guy was doing that [getting his mail on the wrong side of the road] and was hit head on. It killed him.

I have been a truck driver for 23 years and I could type a whole page here on why its wrong but would it matter ?

Yep , I just saw a dealer who shall go nameless, truck pulled half off the road to unload a tractor, off a trailer hooked to a pick up, no flashers on.!

The problem is when they have their headlights on. Since you have to pass by on the wrong side, there's no way to avoid the blinding headlights, whether they're on high or low. Surely you have experienced that?

Where in the world do you live that mail carriers drive against oncomming traffic Tom? Here in the USA, mail carriers drive cars with steering wheel on the right so they can flow with traffic and reach boxes.

Outside of the Post Office trucks, in all my years traveling the roads I think I've seen maybe 3 right hand drive vehicles driven by rural mail carriers. Most drive a left hand drive car or truck with an auto tranny and drive from the pass seat.

We used to be taught to turn our highs down and the wig wag headlights off at accident scenes. No sense causing another accident! Sadly, most fire depts/EMS and many police agencies don't follow that idea. Maybe it's a liability thing these days, but it's darn hard to see with brights in your face.

I was in the UK back in the early '60's and it was unlawful to have your vehicle in motion with the parking lights on.

Found that peculiar as in S. TX. that is what you used at dawn and dusk rather than head lights (the custom, not the law). Course now going and coming from work (used to before retiring) I hated to drive at those times as lots of oncoming vehicles had no lights at all and the vehicles just blended in with the scenery. Dare not pass.

I have seen that also ,heading home from work a couple of months ago I nearly got into a wreck because of an idiot doing that on a curve by a hill on a buisy state highway. I dont mind stupid people, and lazy folks dont annoy me too much if they stay out of my way,BUT stupid lazy people that endanger my life make me verry angry

I was driving down the road one day and had to take aggressive evasive action when a car did a three point turn in front of me, and then 200 yards up the road forced me to stop while she changed lanes in front of me. The lady then turned off and then I saw a police cruiser in the mirror. As the cruiser went by me to follow her I saw that it was my friend. I turned also and saw him pull her over. I stopped to say hi, and I heard him tell her in a very direct manner that he didn't stop her for an argument, and then listed off about five things that she was going to get cited for. Then he turned to me with a big smile and how'ya doin? It was nice to have him there at that moment.

MJ,
Read the rest of the post.Maybe the light will come on

Problem is all your new cars have automatic headlights, you never touch the switch and they come on or go off all on their own. See people get out of their cars and walk away and the lights shut off after a couple minutes? That's the same people who don't know how to turn their lights on/off.

The point is I've rarely seen a RIGHT HAND DRIVE vehicle used by rural carriers, but you made sound like all of them were right hand drive.
