replaced thermostat & used Napa self adhesive gasket & leaked without the tractor running. anyone use this & is cork the best gasket to use with permatex?

Shouldn't be using RTV sealant with a gasket. It can cause the gasket to push out and leak. I've always used paper gaskets dry, although I have sometimes used a good gasket adhesive shellac on occasion to help hold it in place until tight.

Sometimes if the sealing area is pitted or rough, those self sticking gaskets don"t work. On areas like that I make my own gasket, and use black tack sealer.

Make sure the sealing surface does not have any oil or water/coolant too. These can cause leaks as well.

Many times the sealing area is pitted, rusty and rough. I have good luck using a thin coat of silicone on both sides gasket. Let silicone set for 20-30 minutes then put together. I also put a coat of silicone on the parts where hoses connect. I have more leaks not using silicone than using it. Perhaps you need just a thin film and let it cure.

When I do plumbing, I'm also a believer in silicone instead of plumber's putty, which over the years will harden and fail.

Those slippery pre-pasted gaskets are JUNK and leak or squeeze out of place, and I have learned not to use them. For waterpump or thermostat replacement I buy FelPro blue gaskets and make SURE they seal with a tiny bead of aerobic flange and gasket sealant if the area is pitted or possibly warped a bit NO leaks. Period..

I use Hi Tack spray, when I need a gasket to stay in place while I assemble it. Sometimes I spray it on a cheap throw away brush, to apply it, when I don't want over spray, in areas. I like the way it get's tacky real fast, and on the old Ford FE engines, it was the only good way, to keep intake manifold gaskets from moving.
