Ford 3000 Generator

Hi guys, I have a Ford 3000 with a charging system that isn"t working. When it is working the original generator only put out 22 amps, not really enough to run a good set of working lights. The simple solution to my problem is to use a GM alternator, but if I do that I loose my Tach drive. Is there a common solution to this, like an alternator with a drive?

Thanks,
Alf

Something is wrong as those gens only charged a few amps when running and had plenty of reserve to run three lites. What kind of lite are you using.

I replaced the generator on mine, either that or the 4 cyl 2000D from the www and it was like $135 as I remember. Do not have a problem running a generator on a tractor of that age since there is nothing but lights for a load and the tach drive hooks right up. These tractor specialty generators put out a lot of current at low rpms as compared to an automotive gen. to my recollection.

This site sells a Tisco kit that has adapted a Delco 10si alternator to accept a tach drive. That's the easiest solution. However, if your tractor is newer than a 72 and has the welch plug below the oil filter (over the oil pump drive shaft) then the engine can accept the newer style of tach drive. Then you can use an off the shelf Delco 10si alt. If you do this you need to change the oil pump drive shaft to the newer style with the square drive hole, add the angle drive, then get an appropriate cable and instrument cluster for a 3600 model tractor. Depending on what cluster you end up with you may need to change the temperature sender... and that will require drilling and tapping the sender hole out to 3/8" NPT from 1/8" NPT. However... the last one I converted did not require a change in temp sender. It seems if you get the aluminum backed cluster from Sparex or an equivelant OEM model the sender change is not required.
I prefer to convert them this way as I get a lifetime warranty alt from NAPA and if it whoofs it's cookies down the road I drop it on the counter and take a new one. The conversion kit sold on this site is a one of a kind piece and you're going to pay to have it repaired or pay to replace it... although I do have one of them myself and it is a good kit...
