Are the bison prices really this hot! if so i am in the wrong business with beef. I know know all bison experts say you need special fences and a handling system and the prices are volatile. I have both that could handle bison. Really considering dumping my few beef cows and trying bison

$1500.00 for a 6th month old calf. That doesnt seem right you cant even make that selling a 18 month 1250lb steer

There is a ad in northern wisconsin craigslist under bison. It lists 6 month old calves 1500.00, 2 year olds $2,000 and exposed cows $2750

Years ago, before my Grandparents sold their farm, I considered raising buffalo on it-it had been mostly planted to grass for CRP already! Seemed the down side was processing, one up side was you NEVER help them birth! They don't need help, nor allow you near!

I helped a friend with his buffalo for a few years. Gov required 10' high fences. Chute was made out of 4"x4" steel tube, and we still bent it with a big bull. Ran off of 8 hyd cyl. Gov Vet would inspect every year, and THOUGHT one tested for TB. They killed 85% of his herd, and then said the cow may not of had TB. Some got out once and they could not get them drove back in and had to shot them. Yes it is good meet. but you better visit several farm and watch them being worked. How do they make money....Sell to you.

You also need a trailer with gates to pen each animal individually. If you don't they will fight and basically tear your trailer apart from the inside out.

Don't you know, everyone is always in the wrong business . it always appears as though the other guy is making tons of money....there is a cost to doing any type of business.

I know a someone that has tried is hand at every type of farming there is from swine to cattle to row crops to vegetables, the only thing he does well is bankruptcy and cheat people.

Wheat I am interested in the statement you made about the Government requiring 10 ft fences. What Government , sure is no federal law for such and haven,t found a state law. Where was this guy and who required that type fence. Have two different friends here close that raise bison.

Good luck getting a vet who'll touch one. The clinics here won't go near them. I'm getting $1800+ for fat Angus steers and heifers right through the sale barn.

The guy a quarter mile up the road has a little herd of about 7 or 8 now...started off with just two. His fences are good, but nothing more than regular barbed wire, and not over 5 feet tall. He doesn't have any trouble at all, and his animals always seem quite happy. I wish a whole bunch of people would get into raising them and bring the price down so I can afford to eat more of it. Buffalo meat is lots better than beef if you ask me.

I got a good look at a bison bull many years ago.Drop that idea.I cant even afford beef so wont be buying any bison meat.I remember the fence posts were railroad ties.Ive raised a few Angus over the years, they tended to be crazy.
