We have starlings that are real pests. The steal the pet food!We cant afford to feed these 'guys'!They multiply like crazy.Awhile back we were told to use Alka-Seltzer.The bird aets it and the 'fizz' kills em.Anyone heard this?Just mix some in with some food and set it where the cats cant reach it.Will it hurt the cats if they would eat some? Thanks

Don't feed the cats so much, then they will get off their lazy behinds & eat some starlings.

what about the other birds???? I dont like starlings either but dont want to kill the other birds how do you control it

Be careful, Steve, you might not think so, but those might be Federally protected song birds, and poisoning them might be big Federal trouble. Might be big time.

There's a repellent called Avipel. I use it as a seed coat on seed corn to keep cranes and turkeys from eating the seed. I doesn't kill anything but it gives birds a gut ache and they move on. Works on all birds. I don't know what it would do if cats got ahold of it. It's technically a laxative. Maybe if you would put it on some pet food where the pets couldn't get to it the birds would figure out it wasn't stuff they want and would move on. Don't know if they're that smart or not.

Google "starling traps" There are several options out there. I have seen the one with the pvc pipe done using a bucket of water instead of a catch box. Just remember to empty it every day.

We had the same problem. Find a place that the shot gun can pock out a window or door. Dump some scarps in the yard. They will come, and let them have it. Dad did that once and got twenty some with one shot. Three times and they didn't come back.

I have a problem with birds building nests in my tractors. I put a mouse trap in the nest. Sometimes I get the bird. Most times I just get tail feathers. They never come back!

Larry's correct, neither starlings nor English Sparrows are protected. But don't try it on another bird which can be a real problem; the red wing blackbird which is protected for some unknown reason. Perhaps because it is native, somewhat pretty or a pleasing song, but it sure eats a lot of grain.

My bird problems went away when a few wild cats made my barns their home. I feed them enough to keep them around but not too much which makes them lazy and less aggressive. Although you have to control their population so you don't get too many of them hanging around.

Shoot one and hang it near the food, works with crows! After deer season I put the deer skeletons out for the Eagles, but the crows won't give them any. So, I shot a crow and hung it in a tree near the deer skeletons and no more crows.
