A new indicator of cold

I was out in the tractor building weighing parts this morning at -1 F. and when I switched on the trouble light to look in the back of a shelf it lit up but in about a second the glass bulb flew off the base and landed on the floor about 4 feet below. It didn't break and the filament is still partially on the base. It made a funny sound too. I guess maybe the bulb heated up too fast and lost the connection that held it to the base?

Brass monkey: A 'plate' made of brass used to hold cannon balls on a sailing ship.Has indentations to hold the balls.30 balls is a full monkey.

(quoted from post at 16:10:32 12/12/13) It's so cold that beer acctually froze solid.

They say that up in the Yukon you could tell when it was -40, as that's when the Hudson's Bay Rum froze...

I can tell if it's below zero when I feed the horses in the morning. They will have a patch of frost on their hind end above their tail, from the escaping greenhouse gases.

When I was drinking, I never let the beer set long enough to freeze. I let the yellow snow do the freezing LOL

Another way to tell its real cold out is when your eyes freeze shut. BTDT -45 on the thermometer Eagle River WI back in the mid 80s. Jim

From Wikipedia:

It is often stated that the phrase originated from the use of a brass tray, called a "monkey", to hold cannonballs on warships in the 16th to 18th centuries. Supposedly, in very cold temperatures the "monkey" would contract, causing the balls to fall off.[15] However, nearly all historians and etymologists consider this story to be an urban legend. This story has been discredited by the U.S. Department of the Navy,[16] etymologist Michael Quinion, and the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).[17]

They give five main reasons:

1.The OED does not record the term "monkey" or "brass monkey" being used in this way.
2.The purported method of storage of cannonballs ("round shot") is simply false. Shot was not stored on deck continuously on the off-chance that the ship might go into battle. Indeed, decks were kept as clear as possible.
3.Furthermore, such a method of storage would result in shot rolling around on deck and causing a hazard in high seas. Shot was stored on the gun or spar decks, in shot racks—longitudinal wooden planks with holes bored into them, known as shot garlands in the Royal Navy, into which round shot were inserted for ready use by the gun crew.
4.Shot was not left exposed to the elements where it could rust. Such rust could lead to the ball not flying true or jamming in the barrel and exploding the gun. Indeed, gunners would attempt to remove as many imperfections as possible from the surfaces of balls.
5.The physics does not stand up to scrutiny. The contraction of both balls and plate over the range of temperatures involved would not be particularly large. The effect claimed possibly could be reproduced under laboratory conditions with objects engineered to a high precision for this purpose, but it is unlikely it would ever have occurred in real life aboard a warship.

Many Yrs. ago when a 12 pk. was part of the equipment when cutting wood , it got so cold for a spell that we kept our beer in a cooler to keep it from freezing . We sold alot of wood that winter .

the moonshiners around here set there stuff outside until the top freezes. Then the remove the ice-which is the water part of the shine. Makes it more potent..

Got this in an e-mail a few days ago.
He froze his A$$ off, I laughed my A$$ off.

Vet,
That reminds me of one of those e-mail "factoids" circulating that says bottled water will not freeze if left undisturbed and capped.
I never really tested the theory other than noticing that a bottle of water I left in my truck in sub freezing temperature was not frozen but when I opened it, it immediately froze. Couldn't believe my eyes! As a follow up test, I'm going to stick a bottle of water outside my garage door tonight.
It's 13 deg out there right now.
I guess it might be easier to stick it the freezer?

My cold reference is ."It"s a 3 hanger night " that means it"s so cold you can hang 3 coat hangers from a gals nipple with out them falling .
