john deere 1020

my jd1020 has no spark grrr. I have replaced all components points, condenser, coil, wires, cap, rotor as most was needed anyway. I noticed when checked ground to battery negative I have continuity to area where points and condenser are as soon as I turn key on its gone very freaking weird. i am guessing it has something to do with coil resistor as I have a after market coil because the jd coil is 90 bucks ouch,I am going to get napa equiv to correct prestolite coil but the ground problem would definetly cause tractor to have no spark from coil as points cant break whats not there. I am not a tractor mechanic so I could use any help I can get. I am a licensed master electrician so I will be able to understand advise. Thanks

Pull the distributor cap off and crank until points are open. Then, with the ignition on - try sticking a screwdriver or knife between them and see if there's any spark jumping across them. Also - to test the coil . . . yank the coil wire out of the top of the distributor cap. Hook it to a spark plug or just have it laying a 1/4" from tractor-chassis "ground." Then do the same with a screwdriver on the points and see if a big spark jumps out the coil wire.

I've had a similar thing with mine twice. In my case,it would start but would quit when I let the key off the start position. If I ran a jumper wire from the battery to the coil it would run. Try bypassing the key switch that way. I had to replace the switch both times on mine.
