Weather and coolant leaks

What causes coolant leaks this time of year? Today was HOT - we got into the upper 20s. When I went to the shed the loader tractor was leaking coolant. It didn't leak any yesterday or all summer, but the top hose is seeping today. I have other tractors that do the same. One other tractor leaks from the block drain on days like this. The petcock is shut and doesn't leak all summer even if the tractor gets super hot.

It isn't because it was warm. The next 20 degree day they won't do it. There was a total of about 4 days last winter when this tractor did the same thing.

Is it the barometer that causes a pressure difference? I used to drive a bus that seeped from every hose on certain days. There were only a few days like that a year but I could tell from the feel of the air what I was going to see when I lifted the hood to pretrip.

I've always wondered about that.

Our JD 4240 will leak coolant where the upper radiator hose meets the thermostat housing on really cold days (around 10 above to 30 below F). I think it is because the low temperatures make the connections contract and allow coolant to seep. You made an interesting point about the air pressure on certain days too. I hadn't noticed that but now I'll pay more attention.

I have worked on trucks for 38 yrs and every fall/winter season we have some cold water leaks, usually older trucks. Not sure why-- maybe hoses have hardened, more expansion, contraction; tighten the clamps usually fixes the leak! Mark

You could try the constant torque clamps. You can get them at napa $$. I've got the same thing going on with a hose that has a spring clamp on it. I just reuse the spring clamps anyone know if your suppose to reuse them?

I had a new GMC 5500 that had a radiator leak whenever the temperature went below zero. It never leaked when the temperature was above zero.

IT IS LIKELY LEAKING EVEN IN THE WARM WEATHER IT JUST IS NOT AS NOTICABLE BECAUSE IT EVAPORATES QUICKLY IN THE DRY AIR. I SUSPECT IT IS FROM POOR MAINTENANCE AND THE HOSE FITTINGS ARE NOT AS TIGHT AS THEY SHOULD BE.
DON'T YOU WONDER WHY IT IS NOTICED ON TRACTORS MORE THAN ON CARS AND PICKUP TRUCKS?
