Tractor Overhaul

I went with a friend to look at a tractor he was interested in purchasing.
It was a very clean small MF and it ran good. While inspecting the tractor, I noticed a lot of "squeeze out" sealer on nearly every gasket--RED FLAG!!
I asked the owner what work had been done and he stated a friend had just overhauled it.
From past experience I NEVER buy a piece of equipment that has been recently repaired, unless I know who did the work. I advised my friend to pass--we will find another.
I have found that many people will patch a machine just good enough to sell--why would they spend a lot of money to do it right knowing the are going to sell??

Not very trusting of your fellow tractor enthusiast are you???? LOL Way too many of those "get her by" jobs out there.

I know a guy who's policy has always been not to buy a tractor if the owner has overhauled it themselves. Might not be a bad policy to have.

I hate these guys who just slop silicone gasket sealer on everything instead of using a proper gasket.

Silicone is meant to be used in moderation and compliment a gasket, not eliminate the need for a gasket.

Might just be me, but when I use a sealer--even pipe sealer or PVC cement -- I wipe the excess off. Makes for a much neater job.

Well that is a yes no and sort of thing. That is why it is called silicone gasket maker it can be used in place of some gaskets. Yes it does not work well on many but say you have and engine with a bad oil pan gasket you can in fact use it in place of a gasket I know I have done it more then once and never had a problem doing so. Now yes if you use it with a gasket yes you need to use as little as you can just so as to hold the gasket in place and help seal

I agree : I back away from anything that has been worked on. I trust the factory more than most everyone else. And it likely was done cheap as posible to sell. Mark

A few years ago, a friend was talking about a MF 135 gas tractor that was for sale and said the owner had the "motor overhauled" by his son-in-law that worked for the Post Office ??
I suggested that he talk to the overhauler and ask questions.
He bought the tractor anyway and in less then 5 hours the engine failed--spun a bearing.
I refused to work on the tractor for him--because of my work load-- and things just weren't the same with us afterwards.

Hi
I pride my self in my work and use silicone gasket maker a lot. Most of the stuff i work on is getting hard to find certain gaskets for,on the parts guys shelf, or without a 2 week or longer wait for it to come in if available.
I am perfectly capable of making replacement gaskets in the appropriate manner. However my customers won't pay me the extra hours to make perfect hand crafted replacements.
some gaskets are very time consuming and hard to do, Like the carb gasket on a Fordson E27N 3 goes to get it right!.
Does this make me less of a mechanic using a modern replacement method in some applications. I'm guessing not as some of the new stuff i take apart has a sealer instead of gaskets.
I will add that it annoys the heck out of me seeing the sealer hanging out the sides on jobs, and I always wipe or trim any extra from the outsides when finishing assembly and clean up.
Regards Robert

Well, in my case, I had just had two of my tractor engines overhauled when I discovered my loving (wife) of thirty years had been having an affair behind my back for nine years and decided she wanted a divorce. Had to sell out to get rid of the witch.

Ask him to put it on a dyno for an hour or two with a 70% load. That will tell the tale of both the engine and PTO drive train.

Here's one I took apart the other day.
Red RTV on a head gasket.
Enough to plug the oil drain back holes in the block.
