Earlier post got me to thinking

Case started with the "70" series in late 69 not sure if it was required then though as CASE backhoes had them starting in 1971 with the 580B units and I am thinking it was law then

I worked for a Case dealership up to 1979. At that time it was an option but not required. I'm guessing it was required by '81 or '82

1979 all tractors over 100 hp were required to have it. Don't know if it started that year or the year before.

Smaller tractors weren't required until later.

Dad wanted no cab on his 79 986 but had to take the canopy.

In Britain we had to have ROPS by 1st June 1970 if you had anyone other than yourself driving. All new tractors from that date onwards had to have ROPS. By 1st September 1976 all new tractors had to have quiet cabs also (under 90 dba)Nowadays they are super quiet and with cab suspension also and now they are talking about vibration stresses on the operator. Next law will be limited amount of time in the driver's (air suspension) seat!

We had D-7 in the army first ones with 4 cylinder the later E series with the 6 Cyl. They sent a group of guys out from Toellee, UT to put ROPS on the E series in the early 80s befor the ROPS. Kit you could easily remove the upper framework to get the tranny and engine out, after that it was near impossible to do that.

It was required in 76 for hired help. I know the dealer I worked for could not get a new tractor without a ROPS, but the customer could take it off.

That's probably right the under 100 HP tractors that we sold without a cab had no ROPS. I don't think we ever sold a 100+ HP without a cab.

Well guys I guess there must have been exceptions for the ROPS requirement. I know of a 1983 JD 4050 that is open station without any ROPS. It came from Waterloo that way.

Also know of a JD 1992 4455 2wd that is an open station 15 speed power shift with no ROPS. It was sold new to the seed corn place in Anamosa Iowa. It also came form Waterloo that way.

So there must have been exceptions allowed for special usages.

I have ROPS on all of the newer small tractors I have. I have taken them off the larger tractors as they are in the way for many things. I rarely have the larger open station tractors on any banks/slopes. They mainly are PTO units around the barns.

Most of the field tractors have Cabs that have ROPS designed in.

Don't know when it was required, but my mother won a JD ROPS with canopy at a John Deere Days event in a raffle in '70 or '71. We put it on our 4010.

ROPS were required on construction equipment first; I'm thinking early 70's.

It took quite a few years before they became required on ag tractors.
