need some ideas

to make a switch for a 12volt 10.000 lb winch i got used.iam going to mount it on a 3-point 6 foot back blade to reach a few trees down in the hollow that are out of reach.it has a 100ft 3/8 cable on it.it has free spool so i only need it to go one direction, the switch and wiring would probably have to be pretty heavy i would think pulling a little weight it will heat up pretty good any ideas

I bought a cheap winch to use for lifting parts off a trailer. I was surprized at how short the duty cycle was when it was being used at full rated load.

My advice is to find the specs on yours, and see how long you can use it before letting it cool off.

You might want to consider a two way switch. Even though you'll usually be using it one direction, and free spooling the other, you might be surprised how many times it could be useful to let out a little cable in a controlled (not free spooling) manner.
Just a thought...

If remote operation is needed, the Ford starter relay is very cheap and will do it(solenoid) the idea is fantastic. If operation at the winch is needed, a #4 welding quality stranded cable grounding the blade to the tractor, and a #2 cable going to the battery with a twist lock connector (Welding repair shop) a push button starter switch would be fine to control the motor from the tractor seat. Be careful to use a 8 foot or so momentary contact on the relay if used to stand on the ground and pull logs. A broken cable is deadley and happens so fast there is no escape. Stand to the side. If the cable gets a backlash, or jambs, clear it and reduce the pull by backing the tractor. Do not feed cable into the drum by hand!! I have seen it cause a bad situation. Jim

This what you are trying to do, but attaching it to the blade on your tractor?? I can use my winch on any trailer that I own and also on all my trucks, as you can see I use a separate battery and used long battery cables to provide power for the winch. I have the factory control cable, it is only 18 gauge wire, at the most. I had to replace the toggle switch in control,it is momentary on, center off, single pole, double throw. (MOCOSPDT)

sounds to me all you need is a momentary on single pole single throw switch, since you are going to power in and free spool out.

You defiantly want to use a momentary on switch, as to when you release pressure on the switch it automatically go to the off position. Or like was stated , just use a starter push button.

my experience with one of this type of winches is fairly good except they do not comfortably hold the amount of cable they come with. It's been my experience to remove 25-33% of the cable.
which still leaves you plenty of cable.

You'll notice that many switches carry two current ratings, one for AC and another for DC. Typically it's something like 10 amps ac versus 2 amps DC. That's because you get a lot of arcing when you interrupt an inductive DC load. AC turns itself off 120 times each second, so there's less arcing with ac.

Using a Ford starter solenoid as suggested is probably the simplest and cheapest solution for your application.
