o/t House Sitting

Just wondered if anyone on this site has any experience of house sitting as I understand its quite popular in Canada and the US. Seems like it could be a nice way of trying out different areas of the country and a great opportunity to meet local people. Does anyone know the mechanics of how its works, I had heard the sitter pays energy costs etc.

Depends whether you have any chores i.e. animal care,property maintenance etc.We have friends that did that for years and by doing the tasks they lived for free as the owners,wealthy,came and went as they pleased without any worries.

It"s pretty common in college towns when a professor goes on Sabbatical for an extended time.

Right now we are house setting for some friends that go to Mexico for the winter. We had some so called friends house set for us while our place was for sale. Them made a mess of thing, so we had to move them out and now wife and I are taking turns staying here until it sells. So it can be good, bad, or ugly. LOL Paying the energy cost is normal. About $400 a month here.

There is a network out there, People trade homes with others anywhere from a month to at least 6 months.
