GM Cruise Control Experts

On way back from Texas the factory Cruise Control on my 2001 Chevy Van Chassis 454 Vortec started acting up a bit, it would work but instead of only 1 try at pushing the set button on end of turn signal it may have taken like 5 or more BEFORE it locked in but then it held n worked fine grrrrrrrrrrr. It didnt seem to be the turn signal or cruise switch as it made no difference if I pushed it hard or soft or jiggled it or anything else and the cruise held in fine when I used turn signals. Also it senses off the speedometer signal (Not driveshaft or wheel speed or tranny etc) and it works perfect and rest of cluster works perfect.

Im gonna let my mechanic buddy take a look see with his expensive Snap On software and troubleshooting charts and his super expensive Snap On Diagnostic computer, I always kid him you can buy those at Auto Zone for $50 while his was $4000.

Any GM cruise control experts had similar problems??

Happy Thanksgiving, God Bless all

Sounds like a fault in the cable that runs down the turn signal stalk into the steering column. No expert, but my friend has runs a auto electric shop. His little box is a complete computer live on-line. Thousands of dollars. Some of the more complex computer control functions (like body control modules) aren't accessible with the cheaper models like my $60 non-name brand China special.

Forgot NO it doesn't seem to be any Brakes or Brake lights or emergency brake or its lights etc etc or any other trouble codes problems. Once it finally latches it holds and works.

Thanks, yep the Snap On Module my buddy has that he plugs in looks like a laptop computer and cost several thousand also. May be hard to fix it cuz its usually NOT broke lol

John:

I don't have experience with the newer GM vehicles. The latest GM vehicle that I have had was a 93 Olds. When I had trouble with mine not wanting to set the speed properly it was caused by the vacuum line having rotted a hole in it. That has happened to me on 3 different GM vehicle. It is just a simple rubber line that with time and heat will rot out.

ON the early Dodge Ram trucks the vacuum line ran under the battery. If a person washed their batteries off it would wash the acid on to the line and eventually eat up the vacuum line. But this would make it never work. What you're explaining here it seems like you have a bad connection somewhere. Most likely a bad ground.

In my experience with GM vehicles, if the cruise doesn't engage when the button is pushed, turn the cruise switch off and then back on. The cruise will then engage.

Don't ask me why. It's been that way on almost all of the GM vehicles I've owned. I never bothered to figure out why. It's just gotten to be a reflex: if the cruise doesn't engage when you push the button, flip the switch off and on, and push the button again.

On my 88 Chevy pickum up I just replaced the assembly when it did that. It's fun threading the wires down the column even with a coat hanger wire. But It's worth it. At the time about 50 dollars. Mine has me spoiled. TDF

Same problem with my 98 Dodge 3500. Dealer tells me it's a sticky button in the steering wheel. These are in the steering wheel instead of on the end of the stick. The longer the pickup sits without being driven the more times I have to push the button till it finally works. Dealer tells me the buttons are no longer available. Jim

There's NO vacuum involved... it's all electric. A good scan tool will show if the brake switch is closed and will show if the buttons on the "stalk" function when pressed and that the ribbon cable is intact.

Rockauto has the switch. 2 brands available. Both around $50. Dodge>Engine>Electrical-Switch & Relay>Cruise Control Switch

Think that one is all electric and the brake light switch is usually the problem, should have the code in it.

Best thing to do with a cruise control.DISCONNECT IT.Once you have a runaway you will get rid of it.
