I have a 56 420w all original equip, However I have had lots of problems trying to get the VR to work properly, What I ended up doing was removed the metal cover and fashioned a cover from plexiglass, Now the VR works well, Has been working like that for at least 10 yrs now, Any ideas why? Thanks

When you say VR I assume you mean voltage regulator. Years ago and I am talking 30+ the "Motors Auto Manual" mentioned that the cover was part of the operation of the voltage regulator beins it was regulating voltage and maximum current allowed from the battery. Apparently there was a magnetic loop associated with the metallic cover that was part of the magnetic fields developed within the VR.

Best thing that ever happened was solid state electronics and the current results. All these whims have just dissolved.

Best I can do.

Not that it won't work, the cover apparently becomes part of the magnetic circuit that controls when the points open and close aka what your regulated output voltage and current actually are.
