OT-Before Ted Williams

Well, with his money, I'm sure Ted Williams owned a TRACTOR too! da.bees, since you also worked for Sears, I know you remember the answer to this, so kindly let others comment first. But, before Sears decided to pay out big bucks to those already rich and famous, to endorse their products, the majority of Sears sporting goods had only one name,
WHAT WAS IT?
I have a shotgun with the old name. It is a 12ga. 36", full choke barrel, and kicks like a mule.
I had a Ted Williams 410 pump, kept it locked in the closet, UNLOADED, but when my son started walking, my mother-in-law did nothing but bi##h about it, and in a weaker moment I sold it.

I also have a sears model 66 12 guage choked 2 3/4 shells that has the Ted Williams tag on it. Good shooting gun after all these yrs. But I dont know who actually makes the gun. Also curious.

Yep, the original name for Sears sporting goods was indeed, J.C. Higgins.
When you research the name there are a few comments that don't exactly coincide, but J.C.Higgins worked for Sears and when Sears decided to give heir line of sporting goods a name, somehow his name came up. Since he had no middle name, Sears added the "C" for a middle initial. This name was used from 1908 until 1964, or according to one source, 1961.
Ted Williams name was on the majority of Sears sporting goods, but there were others. I have a limited edition tent with Sir Edmund Hillarys' name on it. Unfortunately, the poles became separated from the tent at some point in time, and the tent itself is all that I have.

Eddy Bauer's name was on some products.
How about the male underware model in the mail order catalog? LOL Anyone know his name?

Most of the Sears and Wards rifles and shotguns were Mossbergs, and to a lesser extent Marlins and Stevens. I found a list once on the net, when I needed a part for my Hawthorne (Wards) .22. Maybe a few Winchesters and Remingtons, but not many.

Sears went out on on bid for their rifles and shotguns. Winchester, Remington, Marlin, Savage, Mossberg, Ithaca, Hi Standard and probably a few I forget. I think we worked on them all over the years at the gun shop. They were usually the lower grade wood and finish models.

I have very fond memories of Ted and the Big Book. I think any outdoors oriented kid in the 60's and 70's lived and dreamed out of the Sears catalog.

I have a J. C. Higgins model 101.1 I bought when I was in high school. 16ga. single barrel. Abpit 50 + years ago.

In the early 70's I bought a Ted Williams model 1200, pump with checkered stock and forearm, ventilated rib and polychoke. gave it to oldest son when I could no longer shoot it. oldest granddaughter, age 13, carried it dove hunting. now claims it as her gun.

Dan, you are absolutely correct! When I started with Sears in 1958, the Elgin name was being phased out. The Elgin brand was their "secondary" or base price brand, if you wanted better, you ordered J.C. Higgins. I had one Elgin bike and at one time, (I think), I had an outboard fuel tank with Elgin on it.

Yeah, Eddie Bauer was a relative newcomer. I think everyone has used Eddie Bauer at some time or another. I know when I worked for Ford, theuy had several Eddie Bauer editions.

I have a Ward's Western Field 20 gauge shotgun (College graduation present) it's really a Mossberg but not finished all that well. I bought a slug barrel for it, it says "Mossberg" on it.
