Being from Pennsylvania, I never new about this old law.

Why would the government care how many pounds are in a bag?

New York potato farmers have found popular demand of eight pound bags, which is currently illegal in Pennsylvania.

Senate Bill 1131 would allow potato packagers to package potatoes without any weight restrictions

I can understand why they care now, because govt.
wants to control everything but my question is why
did they write that law way back when?

What is illegal, selling exactly 8lb bags, or anything bigger?
Are they forced to stick with 5lb and 10lb for example?
Just curious, it still sounds stupid, but maybe there was
a reason for it at one point.
Local scales in 5lb increments or some such long past restriction

Sugar used to come in 5 or 10 pound bags.
Now it's 4 pounds, at the same price that the
5's used to be. Us old folks know the difference,
but young people, raised on 4 pound bags just
accept the "4 pound Standard" and don't recognize
the price rip off !
AND...did you know that the U.S. has the highest
sugar prices in the world..due to Govt. subsidies?
I'll bet those 8 pound bags of potato's sell for
what the 10's used to !

A jar of pasta sauce shrunk by 2 0z and price went up 30 cents. This happened to barbeque sauce and salad dressing last year.I moved to a cheaper brand that didnt change the size.Liked it much better and dropped the brand I used for years. The 14 oz pound has been with us for a long time.I expect price increases on products but not short measure. Many people will buy the 8 lb bag and not notice the short measure.I think the PA law is there to stop short measure of smaller packaging .
