Delco alternator

I'm almost sure about this, but don't want to start a fire.

If I replace an existing Delco alternator that uses an external regulator with a single wire self exciter, all I have to do is hook up the big wire and leave the two prong plug out that plugs in to the side. Correct?

Yes, just tape the bare wires up. That said... it's probably cheaper to use the 10DN externally regulated job than the 1 wire setup. You'll also lose your charge indicator light with the 1 wire. A 3 wire 10si internally regulated would also be easy to hook up...

I already changed it about an hour ago. I don't know what kind of alternator it had originally, but I don't think the Delco was it,somebody had made a new bracket to put the Delco on. I just didn't want to go through the hassle of trying to find a regulator to match the one that's on it if it was the regulator instead of the alternator. It was just simpler to buy a $50 single wire and be done with it.

hat is true. The 10DN plug won't plug into a 10SI anyway.

In the long run switch to a Delco 10si internal reg. one will be cheaper and if you buy it from the right place may have a life time warranty. Not hard to wire up and the cost will be half of the other one

Dunno why you would want a one wire job when a 3 wire 10si is pert-neer a plug and play deal conversion for yer 10DN and all the lights are gauges will work as it did prior to the conversion..

I sure don't want to add fuel to any fire, or start anything,m but Ive had a problem with my Delco 10SI not wanting to charge except at very very high RPM's. Long story short, I added a diode and plug from a man named CharlieU, and the thing now has three wires, I guess you'd say... anyway, it works perfectly, instantly charges right up whtn I start the tractor, tapers off, keeps the batery charged, could not work any better. Just for info.

It hasn't worked as long as I've owned the tractor. It's a diesel and I left the key on a week ago Monday when I got done feeding in the morning. Next morning the battery was almost dead. The alternator hasn't worked since. I either smoked the alternator or regulator and I'm not going to keep swapping out parts til I find the problem.
