1947 Farmall H gearbox

I was changing oil in my diff/trans gearbox for the first time on my H and I went in with a magnet and retrieved a broken roller bearing out of the differential drain hole. I also found 1/2 half of a broken roller bearing out of the forward plug as well. The one out of the main drain plug was both halves of one roller approx. 7/16" in diameter. Any idea where these may be from in there? Also is it possible to see the roller bearings through the top cover or some place as it's a remote chance they could have been left from a previous failure before I bought the tractor, about a year ago. Very doubtful as the gear lube had alot of water in it. Approx. 1/2 gallon possibly more. If I need to replace bearings how to remove parts for access to roller bearings where they are used in the gearbox. I have 3 manuals and none have removal and install just show the diff./trans. disassembled not even the process of disassembly and assembly so any information would be a great help.

Have you been using and driving the tractor? If so, you would have noticed if a bearing was totally gone. I'm guessing those bearing pieces you found are from a long time ago bearing failure.

The roller bearing part would be from the main shaft pilot bearing. If the tractor stays in fifth gear when driving it almost certainly has already been replaced.

I found the same thing in mine, but could not find where they were missing from, and no one was alive to fess up.

Well I finished the winterizing here on my H and ran it, and drove it. I put it through the gears a number of times and it went in all gears upshifting with no problem and stayed in all gears even jumping and bouncing all over with the tire chains on it so I would have to think that if there were a problem it should have showed up in some way. If there are any further suggestions someone might have please by all means let me know. Otherwise I'm going to put it in the barn ready for moving snow. Thank You all very much. It's a real peace of mind having experienced input about this stuff. I am a diesel mechanic by trade but this is far from an over the road truck or heavy equiptment so need to ask those who do know. Thanks Again!! Everyone!!!!!!!
