Well the cribs are full

One of the boys helped me yesterday and we filled the last corn crib. It was touch and go in a few wet spots,so good thing we got it. We had more rain overnight with more on the way. We left two loads on the wagons to grind since I don't know when I'll be able to get back out there in the mud. There are about 12 loads left,I'll just have to pile it on the ground.

There are three loads that I'll have to chop. I finished one side of the field with come seed that I bought for silage corn. The darned stuff is supposed to be seven days earlier maturing than the rest, but I can bite right in to it like sweet corn. I've chopped two loads already, been running a little out on the ground to the cows every day.

I want to get the stalks on the 15 acres that I picked last week cut and baled before I give much thought to picking and piling the rest.

We got the cribs as full as we can . BUT there is still about fifteen acres to do . Knew this was going to happen . I wanted to chop one more field but was over ruled . So now i get this what are we going to do with the rest . I told Eugene that is what a COMBINE is for so shell and sell . He spent half the day yesterday tryen to find someone that would let us us there cribs. Yea that went well. We have three 1400 bushel cribs plum full , we used one and three quarter cribs this year to grind feed out of , never touched the third crib . This year the picker lost somuch corn that it shelled in the field that the ground was covered with shelled corn and what we shoveled up at the elevator i gave up on tryen to sack it and just put the big bucket on the skid steer and started putting it a 350 Kills Bros gravity box . Well that wagon is almost running over with shelled corn . The moisture was 19 to 20 % . Seems that they don't make a good picking corn anymore . Plus this picking thing is getting to be to much work to slow and tomany tractors running . one five ro sis thousand bushel bin with a drying floor and a bin dryer would do us just fine and one nice OLD 540 or 550 Massey would fill the bill for us . One good day maybe two we would be done .

I was amazed at how little corn shelled this year. I'd have to look up the numbers, but I planted Masters Choice. I cut back on my population a little to 24,000 and the ears are HUGE. I didn't have anything that slid out of the cribs through the bars of those Behlen cribs. The wife and I are usually out there with five gallon pails picking up at least a few loader buckets full from around them.

That darned silage corn,it said it was good for silage or picking. A real tall variety with a white cob. The stalks are still green as can be and like I said, the grain is soft. It still has more moisture than last years silage corn was in early September. I wouldn't have any trouble at all getting it to ferment in the bunker if I was to chop a bunch right now.

Well, you could have the problem my neighbor to the west has. Isn't even going to bother combining. Says he would spend more in fuel than he'd get back in corn.
Some corn around here turned out OK, some wasn't worth a darn.
Neighbor is blaming it on "bad seed". I figure he had the perfect bad growing season - bad timing on every aspect from planting on.

Seemed to work out just the opposite down here. The hay wasn't anything more than average but the corn is outstanding. I had about the same acreage as last year,if anything an acre or two less but we didn't even use this last crib last year. The ears are so darned big I might have to cut them up with a chainsaw and use the splitter on them before I can get them in to the grinder. lol

Glad to hear corn's working out well.
Hope you and the Mrs are staying dry this afternoon!
I dug the generator out and started it just in case.

That Master Choice corn would it be 530 or 525 ? Mine took forever to dry down and my combine hates white cob corn as the cob seems rubbery this year. It does make a good silage or snaplage corn.I will plant some next year because it seams that one year is not a fair trial. We finished our crib on friday night. It was a long slow harvest this year because of little extra help, but the silos are full,a silage bag of snaplage, two small corn bins and one crib and still took 3000 bu to the elevater in town.Much better harvest than anyone thought with the weather.

Careful there RR, Someone won't be smart enough to know you're kidding & call you a liar about the size of those ears LOL. Good to hear you're done with the picking for the year. Always good to get started and better to get done. Keith
