Keeping up with old iron

We have quite a few pieces. Here and there. Gas and diesel. I enjoy having my wife pull starting me on my JD 70D and I toddle around the yard for and hour. It's not working. It's just running. Can't be getting hot. My old skidder has a cummins 8.3 waiting for its chance to go work. I love to go start it and see the oil pressure run up and see the alternator charge. Move the grapple about and do this and that.
Is it better to not? If it's not getting hot from doing hard proper work. I can't make them them work at all times but enjoy them. Should I leave them sit and not use them so lightly.

Get them up to operating temp so that everything heats up. You better off doing that than letting them sit. You will have junk in the fuel filters and leaking seals eventually. It's also good for YOU. Fumes from an old diesel or carb engine are proven to make an old boy smile.

notjustair, couldn't have said it better if I tried, nothing better than getting out and cranking up your equipment and playing around.

Well what does your wife think of pull starting you on your JD 70 D? and which is she pull starting you or the tractor?

An old bridge carpenter that I worked with told me about his old black neighbor. He looked out one COLD morning, and old George was trying to start his old JD A. Burt couldn't stand it (George was a real good neighbor) so he went to the shed and fired up his tractor, and brought it over to pull start George's A. Burt said that they drug that old A up and down the road four or five times, and it finally started. George was all smiles and walked around the old JD two or three times, beaming from ear to ear. Then he reached over and pushed the kill button on the mag. Burt said, "My God - why did you kill it!!!" George said, "Oh - I just wanted to see if it would start."

Ayup! It's kinda like chicken soup, It's good for ya! And it doesn't matter if they are large or small.
I think the only compliment that my Mother-in-Law ever gave me was to say that she had never known anyone that enjoyed taking an old piece of iron and bringing it back to life any more than I did!

Ha your funny! In this instance she is in the truck trying to
follow hand signals. There has been an instance or two when
we don't communicate very well in this program!

If I had to pull start any of my 5 two cylinder John Deeres I'd never get anything done around here. Good hot mag and a properly adjusted carburetor, along with good general engine condition goes a long way.

Run 'em!
It would be better to work them, but that's not always possible.
I try to run them long enough to get good and hot, not just a few
minutes to charge the battery. Run them up to operating temp for
as long as you can to get rid of condensation in the oils.

(quoted from post at 20:27:20 11/17/13) their must bee a grammer form on hear sumwhear aint their?

Well their shud be!!! I would like to start a campaign to go back to old English starting with using the word preventive instead of preventative. Would you say correctative?
