Ford 4000 Trans...

Hey guys it's Bryce. My neighbor has a Ford 4000, early style. It has a failed SOS in it, and he has been looking for a two sticker for it. I found a late 4000 frame and engine on CL for $1500, complete and working. It has a two sticker in it, what I want to know is if this trans from the late 4000 will go into the early 4000? Let me know what you think! Thanks, Bryce

What do you mean by 'early' 4000. If you're talking about a 62-64 round hood model, then no... they are different tractors and the transmission will not fit. If you're talking about an early version of the 'world' 4000 (65-mid 68) with a square hood... then the answer is mabey. Generally speaking that swap can be made but IIRC, the SOS tractors used a different crown/pinion combination in the rear end and the hydraulic pumps were located in different locations... so if you want to do that swap the best thing is to simply mate your engine to the new rear half and go like that. IIRC, it also requires a flywheel change on the engine as the flywheel needs to stay with the appropriate transmission. Outside of that, it should work fine.

Early style??? 3 cyl or 4. But both require a swap of everything from rear engine plate back, then you still have PTO and hydraulic pump issues. Usually more trouble than its worth.

If it is the 4 cyl 4000 you want to get a five speed to swap in. Is the SOS original or 2nd generation?
