Tisco voltage regulator problems?

Just wondering if anyone else has had problems with Tisco voltage regulators. Have tried 4 different ones for different tractors I"ve worked on over the past couple of years and none of them have ever worked. Dad has been a tractor mechanic since 1966 so it"s not like we don"t know how to install a regulator. Wondering what everyone"s opinions are one the most reliable brand of regulators? Thanks

I've had problems with them too, and the ones from TSC,
which are probably the same ones.
I had one that worked great! For a day. Another quit
in less than two hours. Both were installed correctly.
I was able to fix one by adjusting the contacts.
Still haven't found reliable ones off the shelf.
The lack of quality regulators is fast becoming a motivator
to convert all my antiques to 12 volts. :(

I have not had good luck at all with any brand of new production regulators. The two cars I drive on a regular basis along with one only taken out on weekends all have mechanical regulators. I expect the cars to have charged batteries when I go to start them, with no charging system troubles. This is a no go with modern production regulators it seems.

What I did was to learn how to properly clean and adjust regulators, which will revive most or ensure a 40 year old NOS regulator will work right for a long time. Most old automotive service manuals will provide clear instructions on the proper method of burnishing and adjusting contacts, which will apply to a tractor with the same type of charging system. There are little things to know, like the proper direction to burnish contacts and to adjust the unit in its installed position. You might need to make or buy some wire feeler gauges for the adjustments.

You will need to learn this for yourself as there are few auto-electric shops that still have the knowledge.

So, I would recommend you try to recondition the existing unit or find a NOS unit and burnish the contacts so it is perfect. I think this is the only solution to the poor quality parts we seem to be getting, no matter the supplier (Same problem with condensors today it seems.)

Oh really , go figure . In the past two years i have had nothing but problems with Reg.'s .But we did get a week out of the last one i put on my buddy's John Deere A , but today it died and will not charge . When he started whining about it not chargen once again i told him i am done with it and if he wants it to charge then we are putting and alt. on it . It does not matter where ya get them anymore as they are all junk . This last one came from the guy that rebuilds starter alt. and gen.'s HE told us that these are the best you can get . Well it is going back Monday , it would have went back today if he was open , but this way i have the weekend to cool off and maybe just maybe i won't throw it at him like i usually do .

hit or miss.

out of the last 4 I've bought, 1 was plain BAD.. one needed tweaking to make it work at all. points didn't strike square.. were touching just on an edge and burning..

You need to have the Brand and the # on the tag on the gen then go to Car Quest as theirs are made in USA but the reg does need to be matched to the gen you are running.

The best 2-unit mechanical regulators I've bought in the last few years came from AG PARTS LTD.'s st./alt./gen. vendor, FONDY.
