OT - New Mattress, maybe a Sleep Number

Been sleeping on the same mattress since we were married (~26 years now). Long needed something different, but kids in college kept the disposable cash to a minimum...

Thinking about a Sleep Number, but hoping to tap into the collective experience here.

Anybody have any recommendations/experiences/reviews they would like to share.

TIA,

Kirk

Kirk,

My wife is a "gadget" person. About six or so years ago, she started advocating for a sleep number bed. I thought it was a waste of money. As you would expect, we bought a king size model.

It's by far the best mattress we've ever owned (we've been married for 51 years). We did not get the controls with the display to show the number, just two buttons for harder and softer. In retrospect, I think it would have been a good idea to have the display for my wife's sake. I just set my side to as hard as I can get it, but she moves her side up and down a little bit occassionally.

It's pricey, but I love it. If we ever have to buy another mattress, we'll definitely go for another sleep number.

Hated the queen size Sleep Number when it had two air chambers. I found out you could order it with one large bladder and that works out much better. I like it now, had it for many years.

If I had a stairway that was not 100 years old and could fit a normal bed through it and into the bedroom, I would have bought a premium grade regular bed.

One other problem the S N has is that the foundation (box spring area) is a plastic snap together affair that is not very sturdy and if you weigh over a buck fifty it will break apart on the outer side areas. The fix is to get a 4 by 8 sheet of 3/8 inch plywood and cut it in half lengthwise and then again to the length of the bed and fit that between the frame and foundation. If the foundation breaks during the warranty period they will replace it but usually they break after that period, of course.

You can also order a S N bed that has been returned for a good discount in price. It will come with a new mattress cover.

After a long day on a tractor, you need a good bed. Now this is tractor related!

We bought the cheapest one, hated every minute of it! Within the allotted grace period we traded up to the pillow top, it was OK, but I missed my TempurPedic, so we again traded to the memory foam top, and got the "Cool Zone" thing as well. Sure its expensive, but we are doing the 24 months no interest deal they had at the time. Best nights sleep I ever had was the first night on the memory foam topped bed. Its better than my Tempur ever was!

We too had slept on the same mattress for 24-25 years. It was old when we got married. We bought a new 'cheap' pillow top from a local furniture store 3-3 years ago.Junk! We dont like it one bit.It it already showing more 'wear' than the old one ever did.It will get replaced as soon as we are able.Spend the extra money now and buy ONE good one.....

We've had a sleep number bed for 10 years now. Bought the basic queen size-dual chamber. I did not go for the cheap base they have. I bought 3/4" plywood and 2x4's and built my own at a height that was more comfortable. It needs a solid base to work best.

I love it! I used to get a sore/stiff back once in a while before the SN bed. Now I cannot remember the last time I had one!

My side is set to 90 or 100. My wife floats around from 40 to 80. We did have a bladder that started leaking after 6 years. Ordered a new one with out any problems and it was a reasonable price.

We will never have another sleep system other than this sleep number bed.

best thing I ever slept on,i weigh 290 ex was 200,never had any problems with anything.my number is 100,hers was 40,i did roll onto her side a good bit tho

One vote for a TempurPedic NASA uses it for accelleration mats at lift off, I use it to sleep. athey feel firm in the store, but lay on one for 5 minutes and try to keep your eyes open. Jim

If you can afford tempro-pedic,they are the most comfortable I have ever slept on. Like someone else already said,go in and try keeping your eyes open while laying on one. If the price runs you off, order a memory foam online from Wal-mart or others. We slept on the grandson's TP but ordered a less expensive brand on line. Only complaint is didn't know about them 40 years ago.

I will vote against the sleep#. We had a queen. Missus wants hers really soft down about 30 I like my side real firm about 80.
I spent every night rolling down hill and fighting to roll back onto my side. Maybe a larger king would have worked better.
Both sides blown up equally is great!

We were using our second water bed. One with 8 tubes. Through the tubes out. put the foam pad back in and fill the rest with a memory pad, and a pillow top on top of that. Saved big bucks and sleep like a baby. Bed is high and easy to fall in and slip out. But as posted below only a buck sixty.

Had a KS water bed. Trashed that but kept the wood frame/sides and all that. Bought a mattress to fit the frame which had high sides to contain the WB, but once you put a regular mattress on it and someone sits on the side of the bed, they don't crush the mattress because the frame is the same height as a mattress.

Bought el cheapo mattress for less than $400 for a KS and then went to JC Penny and bought one of their 2" foam tops....same stuff that the whole mattress is made of for a $1k or more where the mattress stores sell you the foam mattress. No box springs; just the plywood floor to the WB.

If you haven't experienced extacy, you will if you do what I said. Use your imagination.

Nuf said.

Had a Sleep Number (different name then) for well over 20 years and was well satisfied with it. Warranty serice was good. Was the best mattress I ever owned. Could adjust my side and yes, extreme differences between sides was an issue, especially when you wanted to cuddle a little. Overall it was a good bed.

Another vote for Tempur Pedic. We have been enjoying ours for about 9 years and it still feels about the same as it did when it was new. We got it for our 25th anniversary and it was a HUGE improvement over the old mattress we had been using since we married.

It was expensive, but in my opinion, well worth it. I always sleep better on that bed than any other and awake rested.

About the only negative thing I could say about it was when it was delivered, it was in a sealed plastic bag. When we opened the bag, the mattress smelled strongly of some kind of organic solvent or gas, and it continued to outgas for several weeks. We could not sleep in the room the mattress was in for a couple of weeks, as my wife has asthma, and we almost sent it back to the store. However after 2 or 3 weeks, the odor was much less and then finally the odor was gone. I am glad we kept it. It would seem to me that the company or the store should somehow deal with that odor before a mattress is delivered. The mattress we tried in the store didn"t stink like that.

Another thing to be aware of with the Tempur Pedic is that it tends to hold a lot of heat under your sleeping body. That is great in the winter and OK in an air conditioned house in the summer, but it might be a problem to some people if they are bothered by heat.

Am I glad we got our Tempur Pedic? You bet!

We have a $1200 tempurpedic and have not been happy. The memory foam remembers where you laid last night and is already soft where you lie down so there is little support and it wraps up slightly around me which bothers my arthritic hips. In the summer you have to run the AC twice as much because it is hot. I liked the twenty year old firm better, even though it was getting a little painful for the hips. I sleep like a baby on the pillow tops when I am traveling, but I don't expect that they will last as long.

The sleep number bed is tops. A friend bought one before us and warned us - when you take it out of the box you will think it is the cheapest piece of junk ever. There's not much to it. Put it together and you will never look back.

We bought the mattress pad from them. If the bed gets a stain on it any time they will replace it for free. Well worth the price you pay (the bass aren't cheap).

I slept on a sleep number bed for about 6 months or so. I wasn't impressed, but maybe I had one of the lower end beds. The problem to me was, it was just like one of the old air mattresses I used to camp on. As soon as you plopped your butt down in it, all the air squished out to the ends, and left you sleeping in a hole. They tried to cover it up by putting thick padding on top of it, but at anything less than full pressure the problem was apparent. After the number bed, I spent the cash for a tempur-pedic, and I'll never have another bed. Well worth the money. Firm, even, comfortable and warm. The only problem I have, is in the summer it's almost too warm to sleep in. In the winter when the temp is cooler in my house at night, it's cozy and warm. Other beds may be as nice, but the sleep number bed I had just seemed to be a crappy re-invention of an air mattress.
My two cents worth.....
