I'm looking for ideas on what might work to spread sand on a 1/2 mile of narrow private road. I've seen a few people with high priced spreaders with electric motors on the back of pickup trucks.

I'm wondering if the PTO powered County Line rotary fertilizer spreader that Tractor Supply sells for $430 might work with sand on the back of a tractor?
Anyone tried it with fine sand?

Just how much sand as 1/2 mi is a lot of area or is it for winter use as sand will freeze and if salt is added so it dont freeze its pretty hard on stuff.

Just guessing here, the weight of the sand is a lot heavier than manure, so start light.

I have heard of a person on here a while back, I think they were doing mulch and some top soil.

Start real easy and see what happens.

JD Have seen folks try spreading lime with limited success. I would think you would have to remove that little agiator and be right where you want to spread when you start. If you move much the shaking will settle or pack that sand. I really doubt that it will work with much success but if the sand was real dry and you only filled about half full or less you might get by. Just my thinking or experience. I have one that I do ever now and then run a little fertilize on the yard but not easy.

I have done that. A lot depends on temperature and moisture in the sand. Even with a little salt mixed with the sand it tends to stick in the hopper. I had to use a stick to poke the sand. Also very hard to load it with a FE loader
That being said, It worked pretty good and the engine speed will control the spread width.

We have one at the farm, I'd agree with the others on moisture. My intent was to have a load on the single axle dump and use the chute load it into th hopper/spreader. Ideally, coarse, dry mason's sand would be best.

Its a serious problem at our place, walking horses on those slick winter conditions, even with winter shoes on, so we needed some kind of solution. We can get sand early, dry it in the arena, load it, then spread as needed.

I had one horse that was high strung, I think abused by someone in the past, it was not careful like some others who were smart about dealing with it, all 4 legs went up and that 1000 + lbs of meat slammed the snow pack/ice, will never forget having that one on a lead shank, and trying to get those conditions eliminated, using that hopper/spreader was part of it.

A your maure spreader is in top shape and you can disengage the wide spead beater, it might work if you don't load it very deep. I wouldn't load sand over 1 foot deep in a manure spreader. The web chain and web drive line are not made for sand. If you have had to repair the web before then sand will surely break it again.

How thick do you want the sand applied? If the sand is being delivered by dump truck can the hauler dump out small piles that can be spread with a front end loader or a back blade?

I think he means a spin-type 3 point fertilizer spreader, not a manure spreader.

I agree with the others- it would probably work if you don't fill the hopper too deep, but spreading that little dab at a time is going to be more time consuming than a #2 shovel.

Sometimes you can pay the county road guys to do stuff like that, especially when all guvment agencies (except the feds, of course) are short of money. They would certainly be equipped to do it, and its worth a try.

I used to have a Vicon swinging pendulum arm spreader. It had a large internal agitator. I thought it was the best for spreading. I got rid of it as it was 3 point mounted and limited for size, and I went to using liquid.
If you could find one, it would probably work. A neat thing about them is you can alter the spout to get many patterns, widths, etc.

Vicon sell a kit to mount a big agitator, a rubber lined short snout and a big crusher screen over the top to stop chunks from getting in.

I've thought about getting it but a truck mounted or proper 3 point sander is cheaper than the kit.

You can use it without the kit but need dry dry dry sand and the spout wears out quickly.

Thanks Mike,

I did misunderstand. I was thinking of spreading sand and/or gravel to fill in pot holes and maintain a gravel driveway.

We had a Lely 3 point spreader at the Golf course, used it to spread a sand/loam mixture on the fairways. Used a hand spreader or a top dressing spreader on a Cushman on the greens and tees but that was mostly 'cause we didn't want to drive one of the Ford tractors on the greens and tees. We did this after aerating these areas idea being we were filling in the holes the aerator with a soil we wanted with the long term goal of migrating our soil type away from the heavy eluvial clay it was.

Don't know why not. Sand is granular, the spreader has an agitator, I doubt weight of the thing at double or even triple the weight of fertilizer would matter. Mine has a 500 decal on the side so I guess It holds 500# of fert/seed (10 50# bags). I have loaded 9 bags in it with a little room left at the top. At 3x the weight or even 5x the weight you are still well within the lifting capacity of a medium sized tractor.

On that spreader, and I think one company in Italy makes them for most everyone...forget the name for now, but the vanes are moveable. The hole you select determines the discharge pattern. As I recall, the first hole is for the right side discharge only and short width. As you move through the other 3 holes, the swath gets wider and if you want 180 degree coverage at 25' you have to be in the 4th hole.

HTH,
Mark

Sand would have to be kept under cover and kept dry.Road sand is mixed with salt here and kept under cover to avoid freeze up.The old open piles polluted a lot of wells .Springs and shallow wells were ok but drilled wells got salted.
