Buying A Net Wrap Baler...

HI guys it's Bryce. My neighbor, and employer, asked me if I would be so kind to ask you guys a a question. They have been putting up 4 x 4 round bales with a Sperry New Holland baler for a decade, and the baler is just worn out. It misses bales, breaks rods, and they are tired of horses eating stray pieces of twine. SO, he wants to know:

What is the best smaller size net wrap round baler on the market? It can be 4x4, 4x5, or 4x6, but a Ford 5000 needs to be able to run it.

They can't afford brand new, but would like to know what models to look out for, and also which ones to avoid, they don't care what color it is, but in our town we have JD, NH, and Kubota, so they would prefer it to be one of them, (obviously not Kubota.) So I would just like to know which ones you like/dislike, and why! Thanks for your help guys, you are the best! Bryce

Hi Bryce, This past summer I bought a new BR454 CaseIH Silage spicial, with net wrap. And I love it! Needs at least 65hp, more if you have hilly ground. My baler will make a bale anywhere from 36" to 60" net or twine. New price...$26,500.00. The big difference between the CaseIH baler and the New Holland baler is the CaseIH baler has endless belts with chevrons on them, to make baling fine material possible. And the CaseIH baler has Four rows of teeth on the pickup, the New Holland has only three. Bruce

JD,NH & Vermeer all make a 4X4 & 4X5 rd baler with netwrap that can be pulled with Ford 5000. All are good models so pick a brand with good dealer support.

Actually the New Holland does have a four bar pickup. They do not offer a three bar pickup. If that's what you are referring to. Also the BR7060 Silage Special has the endless mini rough top belts that are very gentle with the crop. Since the acquisition of Case IH by Fiat Case IH now gets their hay equipment from New Holland where they used to get it from Hesston.

As far as an older baler I would get a New Holland, there should be some nice earlier BRs out there.

The main reason I would get a New Holland is the front feeding net wrap and the combination roller/belt bale chamber. You will have the best shaped bales and with the front feeding net wrap the wrap will travel less than an inch from the actuator to the bale and you can see from the tractor that the net wrap is working. The other brands have a rear feeding net wrap that relies on the belts to pull the wrap into the chamber.
