tough harvest for the 3300

Been at the milo harvest for 2 days now with my JD
3300. While running at the bottom end of first
gear and only using half the header we were having
terrible plugging issues at the lower feeder
house. I made multiple adjustments to the feeder
house chain but to no avail. Since nothing else
seemed to work I decided to set the feeder house
up for corn (which the manual says not to do for
milo). Plugging issues are gone and I can use the
whole 13' header. Now for my question: is the
manual wrong and does everyone set the feeder
house up for corn in heavy milo? Or is my machine
just "special".

will try to post some pics later.

I have never done milo. First problem I had with a 7700 and 18' head, was running the head on the slow sprocket. The next problem was bunching on the right end of the head. This was in beans. When I went to a full finger head that mostly went away, just short beans in ponds. Now I am runing a 630F on a 9670 and things work even better. A draper would be the best, Maybe you should try a MacDon on your 3300?? But you would need a lot of things, weights, larger tank and motor, etc. Just kidding. Sorry I couldn't help much with the milo.

I would go with what-ever works for you. I have never changed the feeder house from the high setting. One thing I have learned is combines are a lot like women. No two are the same!

Don't know about a 3300 but a 6600 has a big and small sprocket on the R side of the feeder house that is on the shaft that drives the header. These sprockets drive a long roller chain that goes back up to the feeder house top shaft, driving the feeder house chain.

This sprocket sets the speed of the feeder house chain. Big sprocket for small grain (fast feeder house) or for corn, small sprocket (slow feeder house). Front drum up for corn, down for small grain. At the end of the day, what ever works.....
