Parting out tractor how to handle?

I am going to part out an Oliver 77. I have never done this before. How do I handle payment and shipping and not get burned?

Thank you in advance.

I have always told folks "you can wit til my check clears before you ship." Not many waited, and I have never shorted anyone that I know of....except myself LOL

If I talk to a man on the phone I do sometimes ship parts and wait for the money. Never had a bad one yet. But email inquiries I always wait for the payment. All too many times I never hear from them again. Use your bathroom scales and use USPS or UPS online site to calculate shipping. Use Priority mail up to 8 or 10 pounds. On heavier parts UPS and a buck a pound will hit it pretty close. The Priority Flat-rate boxes are a pretty good deal for smaller parts that will fit in the box and the boxes are free. Your post office should have a supply.

I have sold many parts and even tractors that are paid for when they get them and have not had one problem.Tractor people are honest except for a very few.

I will sometimes ship parts before payment if they are small and cheap, or if they are going to someone with whom I have done business before or who I see often on the forum. Larger money amounts or strangers I ask for paypal or a post office money order, I have had bad checks and also a very suspicious bank type money order that had "void" in the watermark. USPS MOs are pretty distinctive, not that they couldn't be forged but at least I know what they are supposed to look like, unlike some random one I have never heard of before.

"Tractor people are honest except for a very few."

Yep, I've found that to be a very true statement.
There are always a few bad apples, but by and large
people are willing to pay for what they need.
Most sellers are honest too, some to a fault.
Maybe because bad word travels fast!

As to how to handle, follow your instincts.
Many times you can smell a rat, you know they're
trying to pull something.
And like the stock market, don't risk more than you
can afford to lose.

Make sure that each of you knows exactly what each of you have. I paid for a belt pulley. I expected a V-belt pulley and got a flat belt pulley instead. It sits on the floor of my garage. He had his money and did not respond to my request for an exchange. TIME!!!!! I paid for a part and never got it. He had some problems and after my second call he said he would get it in the mail tomorrow. Three months later he said it was my fault because he had already thrown out the tracking information.
I have been burned twice.

Part of a good transaction is making sure the part gets to the buyer in good condition. Be sure to pack things well. If the part moves around it the box when you shake it, it's not packed very well. Be sure to use a packing material that will hold the part in place in the box....don't use crumpled newspaper to hold a cast iron part. I've received packages with the (heavy) contents sticking out of a hole in the box because the seller was to lazy or ignorant to package properly. He just threw the items in the box loose.

For heavy or bigger items you'll need to build crates out of OSB and 1X material.

You really haven't said where you are going to sell parts. CL/Ebay/YT? Checks can take up to 10 days to clear with some banks. They forge bank cashiers checks now a days.
Pay Pal is the best bet.

Maybe the cheapest way is to go to a swap meet with the parts . However this is alot of work . You have to load them display them reload ,unload back home and store away. If you sell them on ebay you can get free flat rate boxes from the USPS and buyer pays shipping. You need to take pictures and "fix" pictures [crop adjust color and light contrast etc]. As others said you will have to atart a PayPal account. This first eBay ad will be an annoying learning process then it will pick up speed . The other day I did forty listing and it took almost a whole afternoon. I am afrad of Craiglist and never tried it but there is no fees at all . If parts are heavy and do not fit in flat rate boxes you best get the shipping cost ahead of time or you will take a beating on shipping. I once sold a sign painters tool box with forty bucks listed as shipping cost and it was 57 dollars to ship. Barely broke even after the sale.

dej(Jed), I won't buy anything off ebay without using pay-pal. As a buyer, I feel protected. Not sure how the seller feels.

A few years ago, pay-pal had 10% off everything on ebay. I bought a go-cart for grandkids $800. I got $80 off. Buyer got his full asking price minus pay-pal's fees. Don't ask me how that happened, but I liked saving $80.
