Gear Shifting Problem on Antique John Deere Tractor

I have a 1952 John Deere Model AR tractor. The clutch easily engages with a click when the gear shift lever is in a neutral position. I can get the gear shift lever into the R, 1, and 2 gear positions. However, the clutch will not engage with a click, I need to maintain pressure on the clutch lever to get the tractor to only move slowly. I cannot get the gear shift lever into the higher gear positions.

Can you me with this problem? Much appreciated!

SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED A CLUTCH ADJ. PRY OFF THE ROUND COVER TO EXPOSE THE ADJUSTERS
YOU WILL FIND 3 BOLTS WITH CASTLENUTS, REMOVE THE COTTER PIN ON EACH AND TIGHTEN THE NUT EXACTLY 1 CASTLE. REINSTALL THE PIN REALLY LOOSE ? TRY AGAIN . SHOULD DO IT

Thank you, ED R, for the clutch adjustment suggestion for my 1952 John Deere Model AR tractor.

To clarify, do you expect the adjustment will also solve the problem of why I cannot get the gear shift lever through the entire neutral slot of the gear shift quadrant and into the higher gear positions.

You probably need to take the shifter quadrant loose, lift it up, and line up the shifting rails in the tranny.

I have trouble shifting if the Clutch-brake is adjusted any too tight..
You may need to remove the clutch-drum and inspect the operating sleeve pin for wear and slop..
That may be why your clutch will not snap-in when in gear, etc.

That is common on the AR's of that time frame. They have a unique gear setup that is not like any other model that I have came across. To get it to shift to those spots you have to get the gears aligned correctly for the lever to move and if not running you could with clutch dissengaged turn the pully by hand untill the gears would hit the correct spot and lever move (would work better with 2 people). We always would just engage the clutch just enough it would turn the front part of the transmission at the same speed as if you were doing it by hand. Then it would align the gears and thay would slip into place. Ours was a 1950 model, first year for that transmission and only use for 3 years in the AR then for a bit in the low seat 60 tractor, high seat had a different setup. If not in perfect alignment it would jump out of gear. Tractor has been gone for 25+ years.

I did an additional shifting test on my 1952 John Deere Styled Model AR tractor. I found that when I attempt to pull the shifter shaft of the gear shift lever forward, it comes to a hard stop part way in the neutal slot before I can get beyond the 2nd gear slot. Any ideas to solve this problem? Thanks!

Clarification:

... it comes to a hard stop part way in the neutal slot, just as I pass the 2nd gear slot, but before I can get to a higher gear slot.
