So first when I turned the fan om in the cab all power would go out in the cab and the lights on the tractor would come on dim. I changed the fan switch it fixed the cab problem. But now the light will not work at all and the regulater gets hot. I also changed the light switch and nothing. I do know there is power to the light switch but nothing to tbe bulbs. Any idea's

If you have power coming out of your light switch with only the power wire connected and the light switch turned on then you must have a short leading to one of your lights causing the drain. I would disconnect the wire from the switch that leads to your lights. (May be more than one wire). Then I would take a small trickle battery charger and hook it up to the wire(s) one at a time that lead to the lights. The battery charger won't fry any shorted wire and it's a process of elimination. When the battery charger pegs the needle out to the highest amperage you found the wire with the short. Just talking from my experience.

Sounds to me like there's a short to ground in the wire between the switch and the light.

Voltage regulator? The only voltage regulator I know of on a 1086 is in the alternator. The headlights are fused by a 20A glass fuse in that hard to get at place down by your feet, as you probably know. If a wire going out to the lights is shorted that fuse should blow unless it's been replaced by something (shudder) that won't blow. First suspect lights are the bottom front cab lights. The wiring going to them is exposed down by the batteries. Jim

John B! I like that battery charger test! I have recently seen this happen on my super 55 and it didn't dawn on me to use it as a tool, in the future!

Ralphwd45,
I've showed that trick to quite a few young mechanics that couldn't find and electrical drain. The battery charger will even show you how many amperes the problem is drawing which narrows it down quite quickly & nicely.

The cab relay down there in the fuse panel is bad.

I have replaced many of them through the years.

I"m with fixerupper there is no voltage regulator on a 1086.

Gary, speaking of alternators, a couple of weeks ago I replaced the dime store Delco on the 1086 with a Nippondenso that fits a 4440 Deere. Cost me twice as much but maybe it'll last twice as long? Just had to cut the wire to the #2 terminal, crimp a 1/4' ring on the end of it and put it on the alternator's battery terminal. Only the future will tell me if I did the right thing. Jim

Also. Check the connection where cab harness connects to chassis harness. Found a few all melted and messed up there, over the years.

The cab relay is not part of the lighting system. It is normal for it to run warm.

Power comes from the battery terminal at the starter solenoid and goes to the fuse panel. From the 20 amp fuse power goes to the light switch. There are harness connectors near the right battery. One harness goes up into the cab. One goes o the front of the tractor, and a third goes to the rear fender lights and fuel gauges. The cab ground wire is also near the right battery.

Ok so what happens now is the flashers
will come on but so do the two front light
and they blink with the flashers. But once
I turn the switch to work everything is
out.
